Shooting Spree in Washington State Leaves 6 Dead, 2 Wounded

Wednesday, September 03, 2008

ALGER, Wash. — A terrifying shooting spree that stretched from a small northwest Washington town onto the state's busiest highway left six people dead and two more wounded on Tuesday.

The dead included a Skagit County sheriff's deputy and the wounded included a Washington State Patrol trooper shot while trying to chase the shooter down on Interstate 5, the State Patrol said. A suspect in the shootings has surrendered.

The man who turned himself in was known to authorities as "someone with a mental illness," Trooper Keith Leary said. State Department of Corrections officials are "99 percent sure" the man is a 28-year-old with a lengthy criminal record, spokesman Chad Lewis said.

"someone with a mental illness,"
28-year-old with a lengthy criminal record
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/l ... ng02m.html
He is on Department of Corrections supervision and is considered a high-risk offender with convictions for theft and drug possession. He's a nonviolent offender who is being supervised at a high level because of his long-standing mental health issues.
DOC spokesman Chad Lewis said that Zamora was released from the Skagit County Jail in the first week of August.
Ok, so a person with a lengthy criminal record and a known mental illness is allowed to go free in society unsupervised. The cops, The judge and anyone else involved in his release should be held liable in both criminal and civil courts. It is quite apparent that this animal should have never been allowed to roam free in society. How many more innocents have to die before the powers that be realize that jail/prison does not reform people?

Please note, I do indeed feel very sorry for the victims of this animal. Most of all I feel sorry for the countless numbers of law abiding citizens that are going to see this used as another example of why more gun laws are necessary.

Holy crap, that's right here in my neck of the woods. If it happened a day earlier, I'd have been on I-5 when he went nuts.

Has anyone heard what he may have used to do all the shooting? I haven't seen anything in the news reports. I would think with all the people armed in Washington, that someone might have taken some shots at him:
The dead were found at multiple crime scenes. They included the deputy shot while responding to a call and a second person killed at the same location near the small town of Alger; two construction workers found shot nearby, and a third body found a few houses away, Trooper Keith Leary said. He added that authorities were investigating any connection among those sites.

A motorist was shot and killed on Interstate 5 as the suspect fled south.

The wounded included a motorcyclist who was shot in the arm at a Shell gas station in Alger and the state trooper hit as the suspect raced along I-5.

I have read several stories on it, and I cant find anything about that. Leads me to suspect that he might have grabbed the officers gun. If that was what happened, then that fact would be part of the internal investigation and wouldnt be released yet.

Actually, if he used the officer's gun, they usually put that out in the news immediately. After all, it's not going to change the outcome or the facts - and it WILL come out eventually. If he had gotten the gun from one of the other people there and they're still investigating where it came from, I can see not identifying the source, but not the gun used:
The incident began at 2:19 p.m. when police were called to a disturbance in the 19500 block of Silver Creek Drive near Alger, Leary said. Troopers did not specify what kind of disturbance it was.

Sheriff's Deputy Anne Jackson, who had responded to several previous calls involving Zamora, was killed there, as was another person and two male construction workers believed to be working at the house.
I wouldn't be surprised if this incident doesn't trigger mental health reforms in Washington. Read the following comment posted after the story:

This is going to be my son in another decade or two and I'm so discouraged. He has had two hospital stays to no avail. On anti-psychotics and anti-depressants that zombify him and only even out his violent behaviors. He's assaulted me and he just got out of jail for elder abuse, grand theft and identity theft on his own grandmother. I'm writing this here as an utter end of my rope appeal.

You see, my son is only 14 and in Washington the "system" takes the approach of poor misunderstood little kid. He's lived with me - no change. He's lived with mom - no change. It just gets worse and worse. Earlier this year he "found" a BB gun (ya right - found) and wandered around his mother's neighborhood shooting stuff. Police called - NOTHING DONE. Assaults his grandmother, arrested, but in juvenile - PROSECUTORS WON'T TAKE THE CASE. Steals credit cards and makes charges online on TWO occassions, both documented - NOTHING DONE. Poor, poor, misunderstood kid.

I work for one of the best employers in the world and I am blessed with some of the best health care you can get in the United States, and in July our coverage for institutional mental health care was terminated. I don't have $10,000 a month for long term instutionalization. If he is emancipated without benefits then he goes into the state foster care black hole (and its wonderful track record) and there is still liability issues.

I believe the mother in this case has seen this coming, and has done everthing she could have done to help her son, and yet all the safety nets that the average citizen thinks are there to help you, I'm telling you, first hand - they aren't there. They are full of holes. The governor is going to review? What a joke - there is no real help for children that spiral out of control. The one spot where I feel the mother of this person is wrong is blaming this on PTSD around the fire, but that is common, parents don't want to admit that their child has a bigger issue, it is a hard place to get to.

I know some of you are reading this and thinking, lock him up and throw away the key - let me give you an education on how broken the system is. My son was arrested by police in part because they felt he was a danger to his grandmother, who he was visiting. On Tuesday morning the victim advocate/social worker called my grandmother DEMANDING she pick him up because he was being released? What sane, rational system puts an out of control child back into the care of the person they assaulted?!?! Who does that?!?

Some may be reading this and thinking you've just been soft, that kid needs a swift kick in the butt. Well you deal with CPS for six months under investigation because you threatened to spank him when he was 12, and have it explained to you that if your child is afraid that is criminal harrassment.

I feel so hopeless, no options, no choices, and a system utterly against me as a parent and my ex-wife to do anything to help our son short of him being patted on the head and told, there there, what a misunderstood kid.

Mark my words - this will be my son in 10 to 20 years - and it won't be due to a lack of trying from mom and dad. He needs help, NO ONE cares.

For this man in this story, six are dead, dozens of lives, literally dozens shattered, two injured, millions will be spent on prosecution and investigation and incarceration, and he still won't get the help he needs because it doesn't matter now - its too late. The system is broken, someone has to say, "enough."

this shit happens nation wide though... we recently had a Charlotte PD officer killed by a guy that had been convicted of 8 felonies in FL and released after a mere 3.5 years...

why arent the judges responsible for these people getting released being held responsible...

Thankfully I was nowhere near I-5 that day.
