Linkarooni to a local story (no doubt he's likely traumatized about killing his brother, but that doesn't mean his brother isn't still dead):

SAN DIEGO - A Minnesota man was arrested Thursday for allegedly beating his younger brother to death at their father's home in northern San Diego County.

Michael Young, 56, confronted his 51-year-old sibling, Robb, about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday about being too noisy at the house in the 1700 block of Victoria Way in San Marcos, according to sheriff's officials.

An argument led to a fistfight that wound up in the front yard, Lt. Glenn Giannantonio said.

Eventually, Michael Young stopped brawling and went back inside, leaving Robb Young on the ground. About 40 minutes later, Michael Young went to check on his brother and found he was not breathing, the lieutenant said.

Michael Young tried to resuscitate his younger brother, then flagged down a passing motorist and asked her to call 911. The woman's husband and paramedics also tried to help, but Robb Young was declared dead at a hospital.

An autopsy showed the victim died of blunt-force injuries to his head.

Michael Young was arrested Thursday on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter, Giannantonio said. The brothers were visiting their father when the fight broke out.

Well, yean, you can beat a man to death. Every cop is taught those places you don't hit, simply because hitting them increases the risk of death or great bodily harm. Chart here (.pdf alert) In that chart, which is used for baton training, green is an okay strike zone, yellow is "iffy", and red denotes a greatly increased chance of "death or great bodily injury".

In the academy, we were taught that a strike to the brachial plexus origin (side of the neck, just below the ear lobe), even with a hard fist was considered deadly force. If you hit a man there with your fist, you'll probably just knock him out momentarily. If you hit him with the baton, you might kill him. That's a strike you use only when deadly force is authorized.

No kidding?

I used to get these for free!

The US Army did not teach boxing per the Marquis of Queensbury's rules. "Hits below the belt" were encouraged. "Kicking a man when he was down" was part of the training.

Lethality was the whole point of the exercise.

I imagine the dead guy had his head beat against something like the ground. On a nice lawn, no problem. On rocks or pavers or pavement? Dead guy.

Pretty easy for a strong enough man/trained man to just beat someone to death with his hands/knees/elbows.

This is why I tell my boys "Go get your issues out in the garage, and if you assholes hit each other in the face, I am charging you both with assault.
