Incident from back home...

We spoke to a good friend of ours from back home. They live in a crappy area beside where we used to live. They had a forces entry into the home while she was alone, about 3am.

Things have gotten even crappier since, as they now have bunches of Traveller families moved onto their street as part of a Traveller settlement program. They've been basically terrorizing the other people on the street, and a lot of pets are disappearing or turning up dead, killed by their uncontrolled "pets". Our friend had already lost a cat to them, and one of their dogs had their back broken, rendering her unable to be bred.

One night, she was downstairs cleaning the aquarium (she suffers chronic pain due to an injury). She heard the front door being kicked open and a guy with his face covered ran past the living room, down the hall and into where she keeps her small dogs (the breed Chihuahuas). She ran to the stairs in the hallway.

Of course, the first thing I thought when I heard the story was that her Glock would be upstairs at the bedside.

However, as Mr. Crim emerged from the kitchen clutching one of the dogs, she confronted him from the stairs, Glock in hand. Turns out she'd brought it downstairs with her (Yaaayy! :D )

In order to escape, he'd have to make a dash for the door. With her on the stairs between him and escape, he was reluctant to try it. She quickly convinced him his health depended on not even thinking about it. She forced him to put the dog down, and instructed him to exit through the rear of the house. Only problem for him was they keep their large dogs out there. So she forced him to exit out the backdoor, where he got smothered and nipped by I think 3 dogs, then had to drag himself over the barbed wire on the back wall. She said they found blood on the barbs the next morning.

I'm telling you, thank Crikey they started issuing pistol licenses again in Ireland. Without that she'd have had to grab one of the long guns, and he'd be gone by then. Who knows what he'd have done to her if she'd not been armed. Hopefully he crapped himself and he'll not come back. We'll see.

These are the kinds of reasons we need to ensure Obama does as little damage as possible to our rights here.

Er... I'm probably going to regret asking this, but why would someone want to steal a Chiuahua?

Man, that's funnier than you realize

Well, basically because they can, they're Travellers. Anyone here who knows Travellers knows they need no excuse.

Goodness, how awful. I hope they don't get the glorious idea of coming back in force and robbing her pistol (or worse). All I can say is, "well done, madam, for having the wherewithal to defend yourself".

Damn. Good for her, too bad the gardai aren't allowed to do anything about them, poor benighted souls.

Okay I'll plead ignorance on this one, "Traveller"?

Another generic name for a skel, or something area specific?

And I also wonder about the Chi-hua-hua theft. Around here, they're becoming more despised than tree rats and many don't even brake for them anymore.

You never seen "The Riches"?
Travellers are a ethnic group that closely resembles gypsies, but I'm told it's not the same thing. Here's a Wikipedia about them.
There are similar problems with these groups all over Europe, but complaining about them brings up "the R-word".

As for the Chihuahua, in my experience thiefs dont really need a practical reason to steal anything, they just grab something in the hope they can sell it later.

Irish Gypsies I would call them.
I guess it is universal, that when a doo gooder wants to help bums they don't set them up in their own neighborhood.

When I left in '03, they were only issuing licenses for .22s, and even then they required you to store them at a target shooting club, or the gardai station.
That's right, but in '04 a case came before the Supreme Court that forced the Gardai to start issuing licenses for all handgun calibers again.

Not what it should be, but a definite improvement all the same.

It's easier than stealing a mastiff? :)

But seriously, I've heard that small dog breeds have become very popular and therefore expensive, especially since Paris Hilton started toting her chihuahua around on TV.

I can tell you that I would not hesitate in using deadly force on someone trying to steal or harm my dog.
