Gun sales at record levels, according to FBI background checks

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- December holiday shoppers were not just interested in buying the hottest electronics and toys -- they also were purchasing record numbers of guns {![]()

}, according to the latest FBI figures on background checks required to buy firearms.
With a few days left in December, the FBI reports the number of background checks has already topped the previous one-month record -- set only in November -- of 1,534,414 inquiries by gun dealers to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System also known as NICS. Almost half a million checks were done in just the last six days before Christmas.
Two days before Christmas, NICS ran 102,222 background checks, which was the second-busiest day in history. The one-day record was set this year on Black Friday, the big shopping day following Thanksgiving, with 129,166 searches. By comparison, the previous one-day high was set November 28, 2008, when gun dealers made slightly less than 98,000 requests for background searches.
It's not possible to tell exactly how many guns have been purchased because buyers often take home more than one gun. But most people pass the background checks. Only 1.3% of the searches result in people being denied permission to buy a weapon, said FBI spokesman Steve Fischer.
FBI officials did not offer a theory on the spike in gun sales. It's also not clear how many of the background checks were for people who never had owned guns before and how many were for gunowners adding to their collections.
The National Rifle Association says the figures indicate more people feel they need guns for self defense.
"I think there's an increased realization that when something bad occurs, it's going to be between them and the criminal," NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam told CNN. Arulandandum said Americans realize police cannot be everywhere there's trouble and also that some officers are being laid off due to budget cutting.
The NRA spokesman also said an increased number of Americans are participating in skeet shooting and other gun sports.
A leading gun-control organization says repeat buyers most likely are responsible for the holiday surge in guns sales.
"The research we've seen indicates fewer and fewer people are owning more and more guns," said Caroline Brewer of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "All the trends indicate the number of Americans who own guns has declined."
"It would appear because of fear-mongering by the NRA since (President Barack) Obama's election that people are adding more guns to their arsenals out of fear Obama and the Democrats will take away their guns, which is absurd," said Brewer.

Of course they're going to say that. I didn't get any NEW guns for Christmas but I know of at least 6 people who've bought their first guns.

That and EVERY SINGLE CLASS of Women on Target we put on at our range has been full and even has a waiting list of new shooters wanting to be trained and learn the three major disciplines (rifle, handgun, & shotgun) of firearm ownership. We even have classes filled MONTHS in advance, almost ALL of them NEW shooters, many of which are looking to purchase their first firearm - usually for home defense. Our classes are so popular we have to have waiting lists in case someone cancels.Rod wrote:A leading gun-control organization says repeat buyers most likely are responsible for the holiday surge in guns sales.

Considering our classes are usually full with 36 students (12 at each discipline), we teach hundreds of women a year in the firearm disciplines. Almost ALL of them are BRAND SPANKING NEW SHOOTERS - FRESH OUT OF THE BOX (except what they're "learned" via TV and the movies).
The Brady dickheads can lie to themselves all they want, but they aren't going to change the new shooter facts and how they are taking responsibility for the OWN protection and realize the government CAN NOT protect them - so all those lying assholes can simply go home to Hades where they belong. Since they ALL KNOW their plan will not protect ANYONE, except the criminals. So, who do they REALLY support?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

They lose either way. If they play the numbers as increasing, it indicates that they are an organization that's becoming more outside the mainstream. If they play it as decreasing, then fewer people who might join them would feel the need. After all, it's easier to think that the problem is "going away" and therefore you don't have to put in any effort.
Meanwhile, we're recruiting far, far more new gun owners than they are removing. How many "anti-concealed weapons" classes do you see advertised?

This might interest some of you - below is a graph of NICS sales, from January 2006 through to last month(as this month hasn't ended yet, no data available). As you can see by the graph, starting in June 2008, when it looked like Obama might win, the numbers jumped up dramatically, and haven't really rebated since - it still follows the old pattern, but the numbers are much higher now, and still slowly rising. One of the more interesting tidbits is that the number of NICS checks hasn't dropped below a million a month since August 2009, and then only just barely for the mid summer slump.
Yearly totals have been rising since 2002, and since 2006, when the number first broke past 10M/year, it's been raising the record every year. This year it will, in all probability, break 16 million for the year.
You can find loads of info here

Believe it or not, the state with the biggest numbers of NICS checks is Kentucky, by a huge margin. They did something like 2 million this year, with Texas coming in a distant second at just over a million.

I seem to recall seeing that before, and being informed it's because Kentucky does yearly NICS checks of all it's CHL holders. That could just be internet hogwash, though.HTRN wrote:Believe it or not, the state with the biggest numbers of NICS checks is Kentucky, by a huge margin. Personally I suspect folks don't believe every thing fine, even though according to our accurate and honest government it is.
