Long guns secured in the car

This thread got me to thinking, but I didn't want to jack it this badly. The more crazy $#!+ I see in the world, the more I think it would be prudent to have a couple of long guns secured in my vehicle when I go out and about (or in Jennifer's vehicle when she makes her daily commute for that matter). So let's discuss. Any of you have racks or locks or whatever? I've seen locking mounts that allow you to secure a rifle and/or shotgun to the ceiling or in the trunk. Unfortunately, they're usually pretty pricey. I like the trunk mounts because it can be out of sight, out of mind. But, having the gun accessible in the passenger compartment would make for far quicker deployment. What works? What doesn't? What do you do and what would you suggest?

I purchased a Keltec sub-2000 for this reason.
It lives behind the seat divider / console in a tactical cardboard box custom designed with black gorilla "duct tape". The inside of the cardboard box has custom designed foam to keep the gun upright and steady. The box is tight enough to keep it from bouncing and has a flap over lid so it cannot accidentally open and the gun stays "clean". It is also "secured in a container" for Florida law if anyone not having a CCW drives my car, they are legal.
I have one mag in the gun. As the chamber cannot be full with the gun folded, it is not. But, a quick grab and a flip to deploy the gun plus chambering a round gets me 15 .40 cal in a carbine format in under 2 seconds. Plus I have 3 other mags in the console between the seats.
A carbine is not exactly a long gun, but 16 inches of barrel is a lot better than 4.5 inches. I can easily hit the dinner plate at 75 yards.
Much easier to deploy and ammo commonality compared to my former truck gun M-44 (7.62x54). I did lose the option of a bayonet... but all things considered...

It rather depends on the size of your guns(s) and the size and configuration of your vehicle. What has to fit inside what, as it were.
I think a small gun cabinet like
this one would be well suited to mounting in a vehicle, provided you've space to lay it down and you can fix it to the structure somehow. You'd need to add a decent grip to the door for opening it against gravity.
If you don't have space for a cabinet, how about steel cables with eyelets fixed to a strong point and threaded through the gun's action, or leave the gun in a case, and secure the case with the cable? Put a padlock on the eye. A boat chandlery will make up any size of cable and eye that you want.

It doesn't really work for my interior in the BMW so I have the AR and 12 gauge in the trunk. In my Tuareg I have the 12 gauge under the rear seat and the AR in the tire well as my tire doesn't fit in it.

Just keep in mind that anything you leave in your vehicle will go along with it if the vehicle is stolen. Even so, I used to keep my K-31 in my trunk (in a partially zipped case), with a loaded magazine up in my glove box. I keep a range vest with some foam ears also in my trunk, along with some targets, staple gun, and some other range-related odds & ends, making it easy to explain that I had just forgotten to take it out of the trunk after leaving the range.

It's not for a car, but my next truck will have something like
this in it. I already have a handgun safe in my current truck, and I think that's sufficient for most social situations. If I need a long gun, I'll either have time to run away or to get it out.

That's why my car gun is generally budget dollar, yet reliable. On a 14/14 schedule, my car stays at the heliport for two weeks.
If I think I
might need a long gun(like in the weeks following Katrina), I have a Ithaca police trade-in 12ga that I paid $50 for, and no paperwork. If it gets stolen......oh well.
