The Gun Counter

Sometimes it can feel like we're living in Phoenix, or recently when it was very humid (fairly rare), wearing lightweight shorts & a tank t-shirt can make carrying around the house somewhat difficult unless you make one of your belts a 'utility belt' with holster, knife, flashlight at night, etc., etc. Instead, if I'm spending a lot of time in the kitchen, I'll stash one of my guns next to the larger upright plates just inside the cabinet door (many times I'll leave the cabinet doors open if I'm going in and out of them quite often while fixing dinner).

Unfortunately, our kitchen drawers are old and don't slide smoothly and silently (preferably on roller bearings), so keeping a gun in a noisy-opening drawer doesn't work, and I prefer to ensure it's way out of the reach of small hands, should they come for a surprise visit. I've also thought of mounting a holster inside one of our lesser-used cabinets, but then I'd have my back towards the rest of the kitchen and visible living room.

Anyone else arm your kitchen or have a mount for a temporary arm to be placed for when you don't want to be wearing it, but still want something within quick & easy reach?

I thought I was the only one who kept a kitchen gun!

We keep ours on top of the freezer, next to the wine rack. It's a 4-inch .357, loaded, and has a speedloader next to it.

Up far enough that grandkids can't reach it, but even The Boss, who is vertically-challenged, can get to it easily.

It's partner is on top of the grandfather clock, likewise accompanied.

With this bunch, I think the question is actually more like "is there any room in the house where you don't keep a gun?"

No kitchen gun for me. Nor bathroom gun, or office gun, or living room gun. 5 year old niece, as well as living with my mother in law, kills that idea. I'll have to stick to "gun on hip."

I've seen velcro-backed holsters that may be just the thing for a kitchen gun, or wherever. They're shown mounted under a desk, but the velcro could be used anywhere, or they could be screwed to a surface if need be. I don't have either, but I'm still working on Mrs. O. I think she's coming around, but for now it's only me who is armed. At this point, a gun in every room is NOT an option. Too many visitors.

And I suspect that's true for MANY of our members and their guests. However, the prospect of *someone* being in the kitchen, or near the kitchen (the other main room would probably be the bedroom), is likely to be quite high when someone tries to break in while you're home, ALA "Home Invasion Robbery" or similar crime.

Just about everyone agrees on keeping something in the bedroom, 'cause that's where we spend close to 1/3 of our lives, AND it's a socially-acceptable "privacy zone" that most people won't enter without being invited (unless you're a criminal or extremely snoopy and have no morals).

Yet, many of us also spend a good amount of time in the kitchen, sometimes even more than we spend in the living room (raises his hand), between cooking and cleaning up, it can be a substantial number of hours. Even so, most of us have absolutely NO qualms about having an accessible firearm in the living room, and other than the potential for rust due to moisture content, few of us consider arms in the kitchen. Is that because there are already MANY tools/weapons inherent in the kitchen that folks might not feel the need to be armed?

After all, I'll take a gun over a good knife the vast majority of the time (except for certain close encounter situations), and if there's more than one scumbag, I'll take a gun every time (unless it's a Derringer and the other option is a Katana or Wakazashi - neither of which need to be reloaded).

Keep a snub-nosed .44 Special in one of these on the shelf in plain sight!

I take it you're only in the kitchen long enough to use the microwave, the toaster oven, and get into the refrigerator/freezer (and/or to put stuff away into the cabinets/refrigerator/freezer)?
