.45acp...FMJ or JHP?

Yes, the argument for JHP is strong. If it doesn't expand, you still have as good a round as if you were using ball. If it does, so much the better. However, the question of reliability is important. My .45 will always feed FMJ. Occasional FTL or FTE with JHP.

Which do you carry if your bacon is on the line?

Whatever runs reliably all the time. I wouldn't want to be fumbling with a stuck case if I really need the gun to go *bang* repeatedly.

That said, it might be useful to investigate why the weapon isn't feeding JHPs reliably. Might be something as simple as polishing a feed ramp. Or not.

Whatever runs 100%.
There is no question except why does it not feed JHP's.

Look at the Federal EFMJrounds, they are a temporary solution to your problem.

Ball is OK.
FlatPoints are better.
JHP is better yet.

As to the problem...
What magazines?
What make/vintage?
Etc.

My 1911 handles HydraShoks, Silvertips, CCI flying ashtrays (and two boxes of Black Talons back when they were easily available) with no problems. The Marlin Camp carbine doesn't like the CCIs but is fine with Silvertips and Hydrashoks.

One of those two would be my choice based on their reliability in my firearms, and they both have decent street records, though not perhaps up to more modern loadings, which I can't afford to buy and shoot enough to test.

It's the .45 ACP.

It doesn't make too much difference I don't think.

I run the 200 gr EFMJ +p, and it is a crackerjack of a round. Every .45 I have has cycled it. I got a case real cheap a few years ago and shot it all but 70 rounds. I like it a lot, and recommend it, as it feeds in all guns, has a flat point, and also expands. Plus good velocity and you have a winner.

If your .45 still doesn't like the Federal EFMJ, there's the similar Cor-Bon Pow-R-Ball with a rounded nose.

If your going to be carrying .45acp for defensive purposes then I would recommend some sort of defensive round designed to expand in flesh. The risk and danger associated with over-penetration with FMJis to great to let slide imo.

Thanks for the heads up on the Tactical EFMJ - .45 ACP. I had never heard of that round before tonight and I thought I knew everything .45.. I just ordered six boxes, two to try and four to load in my carry pieces.

Note to self..you need to get out more.
