I was walking out of a Chinese restaurant where I had just eaten dinner at about 2130 that night. At the time, I had just paid for my meal and was dressed in a woodland camo cold weather jacket, a flat cap, and jeans, my usual attire for a night out. I was heading away from the restaurant and toward my truck when I noticed these two other guys in the parking lot. It would have been just an ordinary, okay, there's a couple people in the parking lot, kind of night, accept that one of the guys looked me over from head to toe, like he was sizing me up and wanted to fight. That raised the hackles on the back of my neck, because there was the two of them and me in the parking lot. After I noticed the guy sizing me up, I maintained eye contact with him, and placed my right hand near the pistol on my belt until I reached my truck and those two guys went their separate ways to their cars.
Nothing happened, but it was enough to make me a bit twitchy for my shopping trip to Wal-Mart.

eye contact = big thing. You didn't smell like a victim and they knew it. Better for them to seek easier quarry elsewhere. Just my ex - LEO opinion mind you..........

Yeah I know. That guy just tripped my funny meter, there was something that wasn't right. Didn't have to draw my gun either. just maintained eye contact and he walked away.

First of all, I'm glad you were armed AND vigilant. Even if you hadn't been armed, simply not acting like a victim goes a long way. Even if they were sure they would prevail, they probably weren't looking for a challenging fight, which you would have given them. I've been in a similar situation 5 or 6 times in my life, so this is something I know a bit about. Well done.

Re: A dark and stormy night
A few weeks ago a friend and former coworker of friend wife was in town, and we went out for dinner. Nice Italian place, walking distance from Casa K.
After dinner, wife and friend wanted to talk. I wanted a cigar. Walked outside, restaurant had some tables and chairs set up on the sidewalk. Lit my cigar. "Tough-guy" approaches. Wants to talk. Obviously very much under the influence. I just keep smiling. Wife and friend come out and sit down with me. Tough guy continues. Pulls out papers summarizing his record, (he made bail) and tells the world how tough he is.
I just said, "It's better to be out than in, isn't it?"
He walked away.
Friend asks, "Were you nervous?"
"No."
Wife grins.
"He would have had a knife in his gut and bleeding out before he knew I had it."
... "Why do you carry a large knife?" "It's Illinois, I can't carry a large gun."

Good on you, Jered! Your situational awareness and stance took a scene that could have been anything from a huge PITA to death, and transformed it into a non-event. Even antis could benefit from learning such skills.

I just love the picture of the "Rambo" knife.

"Illegal knife problem". <Snort> From Home Depot?!?! Are they kidding?
Good luck with that. The next phase of the investigation will look into out-of-state knife sales to New York residents. "Those companies are opening themselves to prosecution to the fullest extent of the law," the press release states.
