I guess this falls under Survival... James R. Rummel had a recent post about raising/eating rabbits, and some interesting comments came up, including the term "rabbit starvation", which I'd never heard before. Here's the wikipedia article on it:

It seems that eating rabbits and similar small game takes more energy than it provides, doesn't provide enough fat in the diet, and also fails to provide some essential nutrients. It can be quite serious.

I was taught similar information about mushrooms at USAF Survival School.
The gist is that the effort to gather them, and the chance of getting a toadstool or other bad fungus, given their low nutritional value, means that hunting mushrooms in a wilderness survival situation was not recommended.

...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

This is why a quantity of fats should be part of your stored food. Olive oil, cooking oil, lard, hell, even salad dressing could save you in a starvation time.

And don't forget to rotate those oils!

I'd think that the 'asian' varieties of Ramen, with the little soy and oil packs, would be best...no?rightisright wrote:And don't forget to rotate those oils!

I started taking the ol' cup o'noodles for lunch during winter. I was surprised, when reading the nutrition label, that the calories are mostly fat.

Fill, I have a large stock of the Maruchan noodles (and a metric buttload of canned tuna and chicken for protein). These just have the flavor packet (essentially salt, sugar and MSG), not the oil and soy. I don't know how long the oil packet would last... surely not as long as the noodles or the dry flavor packet.
I rarely eat them as I have hypertension (controlled w. meds) and shouldn't have a lot of sodium. But in an emergency situation, I would just reduce the amount of flavoring I add and supplement w. garlic powder, cayenne, etc. That said, I have on occasion eaten ones that were over 3 years old and they tasted fine.
For someone who is looking for an easy, cheap way to start stockpiling food, Ramen, tuna and a good multi-vitamin is a great start.

Rabbit is GREAT food as long as you don't have to expend a lot of energy to get it, you know, kinda' like going down to your local grocery store (Vons, Ralphs, Kroggers, Wal-Mart, etc.), except you'll likely have to go to the local butcher shop since nobody else wants to carry BUTCHERED BUNNY (especially around Easter - "Hey kids, guess what we're having for dinner????!!? It's Peter CottonTail, isn't that GREAT????" - after they all get about 3/4 of the way through their meals and oooing and ahhhing about how good the meat tastes).
Properly fixed rabbit tastes GREAT!!! And no, I'm NOT kidding!

You can freeze most oils/fats. Or you could store nuts, they're high in fat. A multivitamin would be a good idea as well.AlaskaTRX wrote:Soooooo what's the best oil for those of us that might leave food wintering in a cabin that could see -30F???
