Springfield parolee dies after being shot in the leg... while trying to break into an apartment.
So this happened in the apartment building right behind the house where an aunt and uncle of mine live. I'm sure both were scared if they noticed it as both of them are, shall we say, very anti-gun ownership.
However, the bad guys in this case shot through the door to try to kill the person who lived in the apartment, so it's a defensive shooting. No idea if the guy who shot back is a gang member or former gang member as well. That apartment building hasn't had many decent residents in it since the 1970s.
And so you know, this is one of the nicer downtown neighborhoods. It's close to my old high school and the track where I practiced a lot with the shot put & discus squad of our track & field. I used to play in the neighborhood as a little kid, too.
Did I also mention it's about two blocks from our capitol building? Again, it used to be a nice place for state workers to live and for state legislators to rent houses. Now it's all Section 8-friendly housing that's surrounding all the Boomer and WWII generation homeowners. It's old homes of large families being bought up and converted into multi-family apartments, none of whom are there with regular paychecks...
And people in the city wonder why I chafe about not being able to carry concealed.
