I hate to introduce myself to the forum with posts of the same theme, but these softballs are hard not to swing at. So once again, "UR doing it wrong".

Gunshots were fired this morning at three people who deliver the Pensacola News Journal.
Douglas Weinberg and his neighbor, Jerry Stefani, are accused of firing at the three men, the Sheriff’s Office said. The Sheriff’s Office said Weinberg’s wife woke him and said that she saw someone in the couple’s backyard creeping along the fence. Weinberg then retrieved his semi-automatic handgun, went outside and saw a white vehicle on a side street near his home, the Sheriff’s Office said. Weinberg neighbors began coming outside due to the commotion. Jerry Stefani went outside with his revolver and saw Weinberg yelling at a white vehicle, the Sheriff’s Office said. Stefani got in his truck, picked up Weinberg and began chasing the white vehicle. Another neighbor got in a vehicle and also tried to follow, the Sheriff’s Office said. The delivery men drove to an open field and their vehicle ended up getting stuck in the mud. The men started to run. “Weinberg and Stefani then fired several rounds at the three fleeing occupants and into the air in an attempt to stop them from running into the woods,” the Sheriff’s Office said. Duffewn stopped and dropped to the ground for fear of being shot as Crittenden and Hayes continued into the woods. The Sheriff’s Office said the delivery men did not try to break into the Weinberg home. The trio fled because the homeowners were armed and they were afraid of being robbed, the Sheriff’s Office.

Now I'm not sure what in the Hell is going on around here, bit it seems the good Col. Cooper (PBUH) must have skipped over Northwest Florida.

0345 hours, sneaky subjects around house; check.
yelling at said suspects for compliance and effect; check
you and your neighbor chasing the paperboy in a car into an open field and unloading on them with your gats; FAIL

These no-load chuckleheads are nothing more than media fodder for the bed wetting wing of the media party. "vigilante justice" and "wild west" headlines come to mind. If a goblin is trying to upset your hearth and home then stop him NOW, and I don't care how. If someone of unknown intent (perhaps the paper boy) runs like hell, then call the Cops and set up a defensive perimeter until the cavalry arrives. Whatever happened to target identification?

GAH. once again, stupidity isn't illegal. Time to change the batteries in my Sure Fire...

EDIT: should have posted under "protect and defend". Mods feel free to move it. Mea Culpa.

Knuckleheads.

Or as my colleague from New York would say "friggen mooks".

They are lucky as hell they didn't kill anyone, especially away from the property.

“The three occupants of the white vehicle were actually delivering newspapers for the Pensacola News Journal and were not involved in the attempted burglary at the Weinberg residence and fled only because they observed the two homeowners armed with guns and believed they were about to become the victims of a robbery.

“The actual burglars were not apprehended and left the area in the confusion. The Sheriff’s Office is investigating that case and has developed suspect information.
Odd one that...

Can't say that I've ever seen multiple folks in a paper delivery car.

When my idiot brother had a paper route, lo these many years ago, Mom used to take him on Sunday mornings because if she didn't he wouldn't be finished in time for church. Actually, he'd have been doing good to finish before lunch. Occasionally, (after I got my driver's license) I had to do it.

So yeah, I have seen multiple people delivering newspapers. This does not offer extenuation or mitigation of the Attack of Teh Stoopid.

I used to go it alone back in the day. My mother absolutely refused to ride on the handlebars of my bike, and I couldn't afford the gas to take the car.

Wasn't much of a route, so it wasn't much of a job.

I used to date a girl who's friend had a route, we used to tag along all the time just to keep her awake. Course that usually entailed the two of us being naughty in the back seat while she delivered.

They may be bozos , but I bet the crime rate goes down in their neighbor hood, or may be a sign instead of the neighborhood watch sign its :: We don't like strangers around here , we chase them down and shoot at them .

Might lead to a shortage of fish wrappers, though... (It's not like anyone under the age of 50 still reads the paper.)
