Now - is that because I sleep in the arsenal, or because I don't like answering questions like this on the 'net?
Given that I lost all my guns in that horrible boating accident, it can't really be the former...

I keep a few handguns in various hidey holes around the house. My bedside gun is a G21. My plan would be to use it to get to the closet where the 870 resides with 7 shots of 00Buck goodness.
And really, that's all anyone needs for home defense.
Zombies? Gangsta bears? Sudden jihad syndrome? Just get HTRN in a hockey mask while wielding a machete and your home is safe!
Remember, folks, you can't spell "douche" without "Che."

Good thing I'm at work, otherwise I might have clicked on that link.
As long as we're not dealing with Butch N. Manly, I'm sure it's juuuuust fine.

Oh, the original topic. For me, the answer is "it depends on the situation". And I never served Uncle Sam either. Pistol and/or shotgun is close by, AR when that extra special touch is needed.
Pistol - 45 upstares and 9 downstares both ready to go. I can't really imagine a scenario in the suburban settting I live in where I would want to switch to a long gun. I have SG/rifles available, but I don't keep them ready to go.
