You could easily substitute "Belt-fed" for "Rifle" in the above essay and it would read pretty much the same.
A belt-fed is a labor saving device. Three or four men and a belt-fed GPMG equal the firepower of 30 or 40 men with rifles -- Same bullet, same range, same firepower (and same ammo consumption).
