Seems like the urban equivalent of S^3 might apply (shoot, shovel, shutup).

Absolutely. Which I why I stressed it is a felony.DO NOT get some FBI style jacket, you go from samaritan to suspected "nutcase" trying to play cop immediately regardless of your intent.
But it will pretty much guarantee you don't get purposefully shot by the police. Which answers the question the original poster asked.
And no, I don't carry one of those jackets in my trunk.

Call. It. In.
"Hello, 911? My name is sam jones. I am at the Mega-Mall. Some goblin was shooting people in the food court.
I used my licensed concealed handgun to stop him. He's not moving. Please send medics and police.
I am wearing a blue jacket and kahki pants. I will stay on the line with you until police arrive, and secure the scene.
Thank you."

That seems to be the best response yet.
Honestly, I will be wearing whatever it is I am wearing. If I happened to get to my car, I have an AR in it, no longer the AK. WB, am I crazy or is my opinion that an AR might get me a second look from an LE?

First thing that came to mind was 'shoot first'. Lord forgive me and feed all those starving pygmies in new guinea, amen.

I concur, but will say that your chances of getting through on 911 may be slim depending on where you are.CombatController wrote:That seems to be the best response yet.

AR > AK, most definately.
We've (police and general populace) have become conditioned to seeing the AK/SKS in the hands of the bag-guys. All of the 80's police shows, the shoot-em-up movies, CNN and the rest of the mass media have all created this aura around the AK/SKS that seems to pervade society.
Your own "Irish Mob" moment is a perfect example, you were a "badder" guy than they were at least partially because of the AK. If you had pulled out a 94 Winchester, would you have gotten the same response? With an AR, would they have assumed that you were a cop?
Realistically, two people are trading shots with an AR and an AK when the cops show up, the AK holder is gonna have a harder time of it.
Compare this:
You go into a mall where an active shoot is in process.
You see two guys, the first is wearing square glasses, a rust colored blazer and looks like some Berkeley refugee and the other is some EMO looking thing with an AK, which are you going to look at as the bad guy?
Now swap the weapon.
Just a bit more difficult picking out which is the "good guy"?
Of course one could be wrong, Gabe Suarez may have been shopping there, but the odds are more favorable that the good guy is behind the AR.

I've seen a few sites selling badges that read "licensed CCW holder" or something similar. The idea being that people are less likely to think you're a bad guy, and yet you're not impersonating any flavor of cop.
Mixed feelings about it, but thought it worth mentioning...

good way to get slammed to the ground for impersonating and generally being a doucheDedicated_Dad wrote:I've seen a few sites selling badges that read "licensed CCW holder" or something similar. A hippie and an Emo? The solution is simple, blast them both.

Not in any way "impersonating" unless you try to represent yourself as a cop. The bail-guys ("fugitive recovery") flash badges all the time, as do "private investigators" not to mention security guards - who don't carry anything more than a flashlight - and others too numerous to mention.mekender wrote:good way to get slammed to the ground for impersonating and generally being a douche
As http://www.maxarmory.com/index.php?p=pr ... &parent=19 -- One of many sites that sell these things says:
Now - if you yell "I'm a cop!!" that's different. THAT is impersonating, though I'd not hesitate to impersonate if it kept me from getting shot! You're threatened with deadly force, but your gun is out and pointed at the felon. You have your Concealed Weapon Permit Badge with you. The police pull up to the scene and the dirtbag shouts, "He's going to kill me. SHOOT HIM!" WHAT DO YOU DO?
You display your BADGE to the police and shout, "DON'T SHOOT. I'M A LEGALLY LICENSED HAND GUN OWNER." The police officer orders you to put down your weapon. You comply. Situation under control. One criminal under arrest and YOU'RE ALIVE!
I recall reading on some site where guys in open-carry states were wearing these on their belt. People don't even notice a handgun if there's a badge nearby, the badge clearly reads "citizen" or something similar, so it's not impersonating, rather it is preventing headaches from asshats who would otherwise have called the cops.
I don't have one, but have considered it for exactly the sort of situation this thread is about.
Face it - if you're forced to draw your weapon, you're probably going to end up in cuffs no matter what. Having a badge will most likely keep you from getting shot by some panicked cop, and so long as it clearly does not claim to be any sort of L.E. credential - especially if your CCW permit is in the "id" piece - I really don't see the problem nor would any of the cops I know.
Come to think of it, I know several retired cops who carry a badge that reads "retired law enforcement." Are all these non-cops "impersonating and generally being a douche"?
The badge has always been a symbol that says "I'm one of the good guys" - where's the issue?
