I'd take it seriously, too, because if you take it seriously and you're wrong, no harm. If you don't, and you're wrong, it's a tragedy.

And I really like the "don't travel alone" advice.

Great advice in a perfect world, but on a college campus, she'd probably be the one who wound up in trouble.

Better advice would be to have some large friends catch the guy and quietly beat the snot out of him where he can't prove anything.
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

Post a target with w/ a nice Mozambique pattern and sharpie annotation
"A man's _got_ to know his limitations."
Or perhaps an appropriate poster with nothing else said.

Or if she's artistic perhaps a collage of photos from "Sudden Impact" with this one at the center.

That movie plot is particularly apropos.

If it is a joke ( which I hope ) then the 'prankster' definitely deserves some sort of sharp lesson in what is and isn't funny.

I've never run across a stalker who'd leave that kind of a note (drawing possible police attention), unless it's to scare the target. After all, most people know (thanks to CSI) you can get fingerprints off of paper and someone pulling a stupid prank probably won't think to wear gloves BEFORE they start handling the paper. The dummies will put them on when writing the note and when delivering it, but don't think about the gloves when initially touching the paper when considering what they're going to do, especially if it's an older piece of paper. Even smart college students do stupid stuff.

Most stalkers who leave notes are usually leaving love notes (unless it's an ex wanting to scare her). The ones looking to do harm don't leave notes, they don't want to tip their victim off and/or change their habits. A stranger isn't likely to leave that kind of note, 'cause it'll probably cause them to lose access to the victim. It's going to be someone she knows, otherwise, what's the point of leaving the note?

Report it to the college. I'm pretty sure THEY will take it very seriously. They won't want any press about scared students and a stalker leaving notes. Also, once she files a report and gets a case number, that should be more than enough to justify a CCW.

Mike's making me think it's someone being silly without thinking through how she's going to take it.

But she still has to take it seriously for the reasons mentioned above.

Leave a note that says "Hope you have the courage to bring flowers"

Once you identify problem, beat near death is the next step.

/EDIT

The anonimity is where these guys get their power from. Once you convince them to reveal who they are, they lose all power. They are then no longer dangerous, and will fold rapidly.

Do NOT assume it's a guy, women can be MUCH more viscous than guys usually are (even my wife agrees). The only assumption I'd be going on here is that it's someone she knows. Otherwise, I'd make NO assumptions, EVERYONE she knows, and as unlikely as it sounds possibly even the victim herself (sadly, it has happened before), would be suspect until I'd get more information/evidence pointing me in another direction.

At least if they get prints off the paper, it'll provide SOME evidence of WHO had touched/handled the paper (*IF* their prints are on file somewhere).

Generally, women don't leave terse notes, they write entire friggin' novels about everything wrong with the person they're leaving a note for in full on passive-aggressive fury.
