Around the Water Cooler: Being unarmed is just silly
by Rich Grassi

A number of broadcast news sources and the The Tribune of San Luis Obispo CA (http://www.sanluisobispo.com) report that a man was charged with manslaughter after officers responded to a call from a man who shot his wife by accident. He pled not guilty because he was handling a semiauto pistol to unload it and his dog ran through his legs. Losing his balance, he triggered a round which struck his wife.

He was unloading the pistol before an appointment where fire inspectors were going to inspect sprinklers in his condo. Clearly his finger was on the trigger and the muzzle was not in the safest direction. That's of small moment now. His attorney said it was clear he didn't intentionally shoot his wife - hence the charge of involuntary manslaughter.

Lose of balance - postural instability - causes one to close his hands. In this case, that basic mechanism caused death. Rules 2 and 3 are critical and must be observed to prevent such tragedies.

The AP reported that the Maersk Alabama was victimized by Somali pirates for the second time in seven months. The pirates were unsuccessful. Why? According to a headline, "Maersk Alabama repels 2nd pirate attack with guns."

Wow . . . they used guns? That's an unexpected surprise - for the pirates and the press. Actually, some kind of focused noise device was also used.

According to a piracy expert at a think tank in London, the international maritime community is against having armed security on commercial vessels. It's the duty of "states and navies" to protect shipping.

Relying on someone else for your security is a sucker's bet. Of course, in England, they're concerned about "knife crime" now that they have no more guns. They still have "gun crimes," so that's not working out so well either. We're back to the same old argument: things cause crime, being unarmed is civilized.

Things don't cause crime. Being unarmed when you don't have to be is just silly.
There is a certain type of mentality that thinks if you make certain inanimate objects illegal their criminal misuse will disappear!

Damn the TSA and Down with the BATF(u)E!
