Editor's Notebook: Remington
by Rich Grassi

Our erstwhile publisher reported on the ground breaking new waterfowl load coming from Remington in 2010. Since the embargo has passed, I thought there were some things from the Remington-Bushmaster-DPMS seminar we attended that should be brought to light.

For example, Bushmaster is releasing new takes on their product line. Aside from the ACR, which I won't discuss (though we shot it), there are AR style rifles that are a bit off from standard.

One example is the XM15-E2S Patrolman's Carbine in 7.62 x 39mm. Pictured below, it's for the officer/shooter who feels the need for a bit more "hit" on the other end.

I fired a sample in Texas last month. You can tell it's no 5.56mm when shooting from the bench. I question how much you could tell if you were stressed in a shooting. It's to be available in A2, A3 and flat top upper configurations. They'll use the Izzy Muzzle Brake to keep things level during firing. A 26 round magazine is standard for the short 7.62 and the carbine weighs in at around 6.7 pounds - handy and powerful.

Next is the MOE M4-type Carbine; chambered in 5.56mm, they enhance the Bushmaster M4-Type with MagPul Original Equipment. The includes the MagPul rear flip sight, the MOE stock and pistol grip, the trigger guard and the MagPul 30 round P-Mag. This package will be available in black, foliage green and FDE.

Next we have the production line's adoption of the A-TACS camo for tactical firearms. A-TACS is Advanced Tactical Concealment System and it will be seen on Bushmaster and Remington products, among others.

The idea as I understand it is more color means better concealment. The patterns of naturally derived colors and organically shaped pixels absorb surrounding light which, at distance, provide depth, shadows and concealment.

As much as I can try to put it into words, the photo is better:

The A-TACS Patrolman's Carbine has the A-TACS Coated Upper and Lower Receiver, Stock, Pistol Grip and Hand Guards and will be available in the latter part of 2010.

DPMS will roll out the Panther 308 DCM Model. Built for the newest class at the National Matches, it's a large caliber version of the Panther DCM. Chambered for .308 Winchester, the Panther 308 DCM will include a 20" stainless steel heavy barrel, a standard length four-rail free float tube with rail covers, National Match front and rear sights and the A2 buttstock.

Remington Extends the 887 Nitro Magnum line with their new Model 887 Tactical. The 887 Tactical will have an 18 ½" barrel with Rem-Choke Ported Extended Tactical Choke,
Hi-Viz fiber optic front sight, 2 shot magazine extension, a barrel clamp with milled in integral picatinny rail and SuperCell recoil pad for recoil reduction.

It'll need recoil reduction too, as it's a 12 gauge capable of using 2 ¾", 3" and 3 ½" shells!

The finish is the ArmorLokt coating, Remington's "All Weather Warrior." The shotgun will weigh in at just under seven pounds.

Finally, the A-TACS Camo will be applied to the 870 Express. The A-TACS Camo 870 Express Tactical Shotgun will have full camo coverage, receiver mounted picatinny rail with XS Ghost Ring sight, the front blade supplied with white bead (removable for replacement) and the 18 ½" barrel with two-shot extension. The shotgun will have the RemChoke TAC ported/extended choke. Speedfeed IV pistol grip stock and SuperCell recoil pad will round out the package.

While that seems like a lot, it only scratches the surface of new products coming forward in 2010. It'll be a wild ride and we'll keep you posted.
There is a certain type of mentality that thinks if you make certain inanimate objects illegal their criminal misuse will disappear!
