signing up for a forum

Post by mekender »

ok i tried to sign up for a local fathers forum today... they asked a lot of info to create the account...

i got this reply in my email
Thank you for your interest in ***.com. We are a group of fathers who meet on and off line for the companionship of other area fathers. We take pride in providing our members with a safe, confidential, fun place where we can meet other dads and share our experiences. We restrict our membership in order to achieve this goal.

We regret to inform you that your application has been denied because you provided an invalid address, phone number or other information on your application. We require a full name, valid street address and phone number to approve your membership. This information is protected and never sold or given to third parties. It is only accessible by our site administrator and is only used for verification purposes.

Feel free to reply to this message with your full name, a valid street address and phone number and we will re-evaluate your application. If you feel we have made an error in denying your registration, please reply to this message. We receive a large volume of applications and prefer to err on the side of safety to protect our members.

Best Regards,
am i the only one that thinks they are batshit crazy for wanting full street address, phone number and real full name?

in my eyes, giving that info to a complete stranger is a bigger safety concern than allowing unverified people on the site would be.

it seems to me that disclosing this info on a site where i might one day talk about my new gun or my new TV or such is just a recipe for getting my house broken into.

What is their justification? I would also wonder what tools they are using to verify this info. You may be better off skipping it.

Probably that part. They seem to be making an attempt to deal with only "real" people.

They may want to verify that you are who you say you are, so they can attempt to keep predators and other undesirables off of their forum. Not saying that it is a good idea to give them the information they are asking for, just giving a probable explanation.

I'm inclined to agree with this one. The topic is (as I understand) FATHERHOOD. They probably want to be able to Google your name and make sure they don't end up with some convicted molester associated with their group.

Personally, I'd contact the admin, share my concerns, and see what he said. I PERSONALLY had no problem being "real" when I was active in Fathers' Rights. YMMV.

Also bear in mind that site admins can see your IP address, and thus track you almost back to your address anyway. Food for thought if you think you have any real anonymity anywhere on the 'net. You don't unless you're using some anonymizer/proxy, and even then you're subject to their record-keeping and have no real guarantee.

OTOH, I tried to join a gun-related board (Cough/KTOG/Cough) once and the admin demanded full ID including full name, home address, phone number, non-freebie e-mail (IOW work e-mail addy - no yahoo, hotmail, GMail, or the like) etc. Sorry - not for a gun board.

I contacted the Mod via PM, offered to validate myself WITH HIM and got a truly nasty response. C'est la vie.

Your call. Personally, if it was local, was Father-related, and I knew the group was legit I'd not have a problem with it.

GrassRoots Gun Rights requires real names, and has that information -- it doesn't bother me, but I don't know that I'd give a message board/forum that kind of info.

What is their justification?
They do not need any 'justification' for asking for that information. It is their web forum to do with as they please, and their group to hold meeting as they please, and their rules to make up as they please, and their decision as to who else can become a memebr as they please. They do not realy need justification. Now if you are asking how can they do that, well simply because that is the way they want to run their group. Nothing wrong with it as i see it. I would think that if it needed justification (implying that it needs to be just, or reasonable, or acceptable) then they have enough anyhow simply based upon it being their own private group that they run their way. If you don't like it - don't join is probably the idea they are trying to get across.

All the best,

Perhaps better said, "what's their reasoning?"

Still, not my cup of tea, but curiosity and all that.
