HIDDEN MEADOWS — Trisha Clay doesn’t let her dachshund or even her pit bull outside anymore. She’s nervous about the safety of her two 14-year-olds boys, Mac and Garrit. She came home the other night and said she felt as if something was watching her.
The anxiety stems from at least three visits by a mountain lion to her home in Hidden Meadows, an unincorporated community north of Escondido.
The most dramatic proof of the puma came from video a home-security surveillance camera caught of the big cat a little before 9 p.m. Oct. 1.
The cat can be seen walking past some planter boxes in her yard.
Clay has seen it two other times, as well. A week ago it walked in front of the window of her home office about 9:30 p.m. as she worked. She also saw the cougar about 9 p.m. Sunday as she stood on her deck and it walked through some trees.
The neighborhood is semi-urban, with paved streets and a golf course nearby, but the area is still wooded and has a backcountry feel. Wildlife commonly are seen in the community, she said.
Clay called the state Fish and Game Department this week, but has not heard back.
In the meantime, she said, she keeps doors closed and casts a wary eye on her surroundings.
