Don't forget that your hot water heater has 30-80 gals of water available in case of emergency. Just remember to unplug it or turn off the gas before draining, and fill it and purge the air out before turning it back on.
Oh, and guys, if you don't already have a shutoff valve installed next to your house(other than the meter valve), install one.
