They're mostly powdered iron and salt reacting to the oxygen in the air to rapidly oxidize, giving off the heat as a byproduct. Rusting very quickly, in other words. In an oxygen rich environment, it could speed up enough to switch from "rusting quickly" to "smoldering slowly" or even, "Oh holy f**kballs, it's f**king on fire!".Netpackrat wrote:That's good to know, thanks.CByrneIV wrote:Unfortunately, they wouldn't let us use them in the field, because the chemicals can interact badly with pure oxygen, and they can spontaneously ignite on aircraft.
I've got an ALICE load-bearing vest set up as my "Oh crap!" rig. On the vest itself it's got 6 magpul magazines in the magazine pockets (go fig...), a Kel-Tec folding bayonet in an old Surefire flashlight pouch on the left shoulder, and a lensatic compass on the right. In the grenade pockets, I've got a cheap pair of compact 7x binoculars in one, and a Olaes combat dressing in the other. On the attached pistol belt, there's an ALICE M-16 mag pouch with three more mags, a Bianchi flap holster, a two space pistol mag pouch, two canteens (one with a cup & stove), and a buttpack with a poncho, dry socks, wool gloves, a watch-cap, some instant coffee packs, and a pack of those hand warmers. I plan on replacing one of the canteens with a camelback soon, but still keeping the one with the cup & stove. I probably should put some jerky or granola bars in the buttpack as well, but it's mainly intended as a bug-in rig instead of a bug-out one. For a vehicluar bug-out, I'd remove the pistol belt, and wear one of my hideous hawaiian shirts over it, with the rifle close to hand in the cab of the truck and the pistol in an IWB holster.

Chris, what is your micro-climbing rope? Spectra? Depending on the terrain, I could find that very useful. Especially if it's thick enough to be used with a Bachmann knot, for ascents and descents.
