PHOENIX, Ariz. -- A pregnant mother of two was shot in the head after a man broke into her home through the front window Tuesday morning.
The woman, whose name has not been released, is six months pregnant. She and her husband heard glass breaking in their home near 43rd Avenue and Osborn Road at about 5:15 a.m., according to police. When they went to see what had happened, they found the intruder.
The intruder had a weapon and fired several shots, police said. The couple initially was able to escape injury by running into a back bedroom with their two children.
Once the family thought the intruder had gone, they left the back bedroom to check on the situation. But the intruder fired at them again, striking the woman in the head, according to police.
The intruder then climbed out of the front window and left on foot heading south, police said. He had thrown a brick through the front window to gain entry, police said.
The woman was transported to a local hospital and is in critical condition. The couple's two small children, ages 3 and 7, were also home but they were unharmed.
Investigators describe the intruder was a Hispanic man about 5 feet, 7 inches tall wearing dark, baggy clothes.
