Why the preference for a Kukri blade?

For me? Well aside from it just being cool, it's basically a very versatile 'big knife'. Like a big camp knife you can chop and baton with, and yet still do other more precise tasks.skb12172 wrote:Why the preference for a Kukri blade?
I couldn't get my hands on a, say, Camp Tramp or Chopweiler or the like (for Bussekin fans), but my knukuri is bigger, is up there in toughness, and much much cheaper.

I like using the cheap 27" - 30" inchers you can get at any surplus store. Can get a bunch, grind the edge off, and go to town practicing. And can store them in a lot of locations.
That said, I am thinking of investing in a couple of these, http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016QT ... o_pC_S_ttl
One of the things I really like about using a stick is most of the movements are the same for knife and tomahawk. Tomahawk have some extra moves, especially on the backswing.

As has been noted lots of times, the important thing isn't the weapon, it's the brain wielding it. It's having the will to fight back.
I once successfully dissuaded a couple drunks from mixing it up with me by picking up my barstool and looking crazy enough to use it. They decided my less-than-complimentary comments regarding their favorite baseball team (made in a chop-busting manner to a friend of mine who's a fan) didn't require them to engage in fisticuffs.

It's a shame the services don't teach singlestick anymore.
Remember, folks, you can't spell "douche" without "Che."

I was looking up machetes and came across the Ontario SP8 "machete" again. I'm sorry but a 10 inch blade makes it too short to be a machete in my opinion. I notice some other manufacturers of the equivalent refer to it as a survival knife. One thing that does interest me though, is the squared off "point" on it. I'm thinking that a careful hone job on it would let it be at least partially effective as a thrusting weapon but it wouldn't look like one
Ontario does make a Kukri with a fairly decent rating.

Sharpening a Machete:
Found this on a Machete online sales site:
http://www.machetespecialists.com/how-t ... chete.html
Basically a fine edge for wet stuff like grass and a bigger angle for dry woody stuff. Also you can put sharpen both sides on some models to cut on a back stroke (or I suppose get better penetration).
I like the fact that the Kershaw has rubber grip. From what I've read that helps absorb the shock.

I would pay $50 for that. I like Kershaw blades.

I've always heard good things about Tramontina machetes. Supposed to be *extremely* good value, good quality for very, very cheap.
Seems to be Tramontina's angle. They have a line of cookware that's supposed to be 90% of what All-Clad gives you, for 1/3 the cost. I have a couple of their 7" Santokus, they were 2 for $12 at Costco. They're pretty good in an absolute sense, remarkably good for the money.
