Bayonets!

Post by Battleriflefan »

I don't really have any great expertise nr wisdom about bayonets to share, just some observations. Over the years I have been consumed with aquiring all kinds of military surplus rifles, especially full power semiautomatic rifles, but have bought the others when opportunites came along. Recently, since I have achieved most of my goals, I began to try to get matching bayonets as well. I might as well have started over. I have rifles that need bayonets, where the bayonet will liley exceed what I paid for the rifle. Slings aren't nearly as bad, but almost impossible to get exact in some dases. Anyway, I still need a Hakim bayonet, a Garand bayonet, one for an SVT-40, a GEW-98, two for a couple swiss rifles that are pre WWII, a couple of decent ones for two different K-98's, and one for a VZ-24. Does anyone have a good source other than gunbroker? I have an old K-98 bayonet but it is in terrible shape. One K98 is a Yugo capture with out any date, so that isn't a problem, and really, the other is an RC, but I'm not going to "Mitchel Mauser" it either and try to make it into something it is not. It has a like new bore and is really accurate. I bought a regular Swedish Mauser bayonet for my AG-42, less than $20, with clip and scabard, and an old M-48 bayonet fit right on a Spanish 93 Mauser I have. My MAS 49/56 and FN-49 already had bayonets. I guess I'll just have to bite the bullet on the rest.

I'm no bayonet expert, but I've seen Swiss bayonets in European surplus stores. It's probably not the pre ww2 that you want though, but here's a link anyway, just in case.
If that's not it, I'd think you should be able to find bayonets to European rifles in European stores, or in antique stores in different countries here. You need to google for "bajonett", and try to translate the pages that pop up in different languages. For german, french, italian etc, you can use Babelfish. For other languages, you need to use a little imagination.

I dont know enough about bayonets to be able to look for it myself, but I'll be happy to give it a go if you want. Would probably need a little more information about what to look for though.

Is this the K98 you're looking for?

UPDATE:
Checked an auction site, and found a garand and a Swiss M1899/11. I dont know if those sellers would sell abroad, but if it's something you're interested in, you could at least ask.

Samco Global has bayonets for K98, M24/47 and Swedish Mausers, among others. $79.95 for the K98s, $24.95 for the Swedes. I already have a Swedish one, it came with my M96. It fits on my Ljungman too. :D Here's their link:

Cheaper Than Dirt has Swiss bayonets, somebody at the Gun Thing mentioned that they make excellent knives. $19.97.

It took me a while to find a bayonet for my Garand; keeping looking around at gun shows. You may get lucky.

I'm looking too - not for a chopped-down one either.

Mike,

Would something like this be what you're looking for? It's stamped 1943 and never been sharpened.

The K-98 bayonets are rather common, and like I said, I'm not worried about the matching numbers or date codes because I'm not trying to mach since the two K-98's are really nice reconditioned rifles. The GEW 98, is another story. There are a variety of bayonets that fit, even regular K98 bayonets. I would like the long one with an intact saw blade, many of which were removed. There are reproductions available as someone was selling one onetime, and listed it as such. That would be fine, as the last owner of the GEW 98 sanded down the stock excessively.

Those particular Swiss bayohets are for a later Sig rifle. The cheapest I have seen was at Ammunition to go as far as bayonets that will actually fit Schmidt Ruben rifles. A good list and description is at Swiss Rifles. The earlier bayonets would be more desirable, but I have little belief that I could somehow find a matching serial number. They also have a couple models made with sawbacks, (you think Rambo was first?) but I might just get the cheaper ones from Ammunition to go, while I try to find the others.

My Garand is a Korean War model, but I like the pre-WWII examples. They are all rather pricey, with the earlier ones made more for the 1903 even more expensive.

SVT bayonets are most often refurbed like th rifles were and usually cost over $200.

Hakim bayonets are just rare, and similiar in construction, to Swedish bayonets, but with different sized latches and wood handles.

Ironically, many of the bayonets may cost substancially more than what I paid for the rifles, a situation caused both by some really good prices I got the rifles for as well as the relative higher prices for bayonets. K-98 bayonets are unnecessarily expensive, made that way by people trying to make matching parts rifles out of RC, and Yugo rifles that were rebuilt out of piles of parts. They do the same thing with other parts like trigger uards and bolts. Like I said, I don't care about that, since I am not out to fool anyone.
