Stabbing with a knife is a good as shooting someone. Plus the Tenderloin is much more upper class these days.
I carry one of those oversize carabiners on my bag/person which makes a dandy improvised brass knuckle. I think your average 5.25 inch knife will be a safe bet, the walking stick will be much the first response weapon I would think.
Get your doctor to write a "prescription" for a cane, it will go that much faster if you get hassled by the Five Oh.

I saw something about SF having a $2700 CCW option, now. I would think a cane is the best option - seems to beat the heck out of a knife, IMO.
If you want suggestions, I have a friend from HS who lives in SF, who might have some suggestions for interesting places to go.

Definitely add a nice flashlight like a Surfire ED or equivalent. Folding knifes are legal but I'd be leery of any of the assisted opening sort.
My favorite Vietamese place is still Tu Lan's. #8 6th street, just south of Market. Not quite the Tenderloin, but getting fairly close.

So those oversized carabiners work pretty well as an improvised brass knuckle? Which of these would you recommend?

Sounds like you've got it covered pretty well with a stick, a knife and spray. That while maintaining situational awareness and a tactical mindset will do ya fine (not to mention your size and vibe).
I car carry (legally) a pocket piece and a fullsize. Unloaded handgun carry is legal in a vehicle if carried in a locked case. Loaded mags may be carried in the same case with the handgun or elsewhere in the vehicle.
I have an appropriate holster(s) along so I can carry if need be during a breakdown or some such event.

Or you could conceal carry and remember it's a misdemeanor the first time, if you ever get caught. Then you can argue the case for reciprocity!
