Breaking the military is part of the long march. Patty Schroeder took it into primetime with post Tailhook emasculation of the Navy and it's just accelerated from there.

Letting the war machine whither and die, will not hurt anyone but the cronies.

Realistically, it’s more like “here comes sky net”

The most dangerous thing in earth, after the malarial mosquito, is a socialist with an army.

The Dems certainly can’t be trusted with one, and truthfully, I don’t think the Stupid party can be, either.

Your take assumes the world apart from us is benign - it very much is not.

Oh, I know that, quite well. I just view DC as more of a threat.

he has a point, the greater threats are local. Easier to reach you.

Then you are fighting the wrong battle. Cutting the military just leaves room for them to push budget towards domestic control.

Of course, this bill is now law.

Ah, great! A "wet roads cause rain" story.

First, let's take a look at the idea that the military is too woke to attract right-wing good ol' Southern boys. Well, it's never stopped them before. Frankly, I consider it far more likely that they're turned off because what they've heard growing up is:
  • The US is actually run by a (((secret cabal))) of cannibal pedophile elites
  • The military is forcing personnel to take a fake vaccine that will sterilize and kill them
  • Joe Biden stole the election from Trump, his power is not legitimate
  • Any day now we will need to take up arms against the government to liberate America, i.e. shoot it out with the feds and troops
  • If you're wounded or killed in battle you're a loser and a sucker
Does that sound like an outfit you want to serve?

Now, let's look at the kids in general: By 2016 it was already common to refer to Afghanistan and the GWOT in general as the "forever war." If you started hearing that when you were 12, and only know war as the world's worst boondoggle, would you be terribly motivated to sign up for that sort of thing now that you're old enough to enlist? And think of all the baggage that comes with that, every housing horror story and VA scandal. Plus, you know, the Navy just got caught spilling jet fuel in the water table in Hawaii, poisoning their own personnel and locals, and denying it all with the credibility of Oberfeldwebel Schultz.

And then there's the whole devaluation of college degrees going on. The GI bill isn't nearly as attractive as it used to be.

Oh, and you can forget drafting. If the government found a draft too risky in the "surge" years, there's no way in hell they'll do it just to staff some extra bases. They're going to have to take a good, long look at which ones are redundant. That doesn't just mean the hundreds of overseas bases. If any branch decides recent laws enacted in some states impact readiness, you can expect bases in those states to disappear.

I don't necessarily think the "woke" stuff is the problem, or not all of it anyway but that is probably a bit of it for some. The stuff you mentioned is pertinent for some (add in the Biden aspect after the Afghanistan withdrawal).

There is also a practical side of it. Unemployment has been low which never helps. Also covid kept high-schools closed and that is where a lot of the recruiting happens.

The woke stuff though is an unforced error. It does no good for recruiting or unit cohesion or effectiveness- it is just a leftist primal scream. It doesn't even help the people it supposedly cares about helping.
