I still need to read Fire on the Steppe (alternate title: Pan Wolodyjowski), the third volume of Sienkiewicz's "Polish Trilogy." Loved the first two.

I read the first two in the Kuniczak translation of the 1990s -- I haven't compared them with other translations, but they're very good. Michener's foreword in vol. 1 is good too.

...and the Austrians, Saxons, Bavarians, Bohemians etc. (And in the wider war Italians, Hungarians, Serbians) The Great Turkish War was the first time that most of Europe united against the Turks; and ended up pushing them out of eastern Poland, Moravia, Hungary and much of the Balkans.

Of notable absence were the French and English. The French were formally allied with the Turks and the English did not see any advantage for themselves so they stayed out.

And the Saxons got pelted with garbage by the Viennese because they didn't like Lutherans.
