Wonder how much pressure was exerted behind the scenes to keep him from being court-martialed.

And how much is going to be used to keep him from being executed.

There's no joy in this situation, although the current administration is deserving of any public chastisement for ass-holishness that could be provided. A foolish young man, foolish parents; disgrace to his service. What a waste.

If they hang him/otherwise seriously punish him, there is a certain logic in being willing to negotiate to acquire a criminal, currently outside of your jurisdiction, so that he can be brought to justice

I realize that such thinking is beyond Obama, or anyone else with such a poor grasp of rule of law, but I could see a better man choosing a similar path.

When you put it that way, there is a certain logic to it, but I believe the Lightworker is incapable of such reasoning.

Pardon after death penalty decision, mistrial, or miscarriage of justice/ extra light sentence like in the Bradley Manning trial?

Um, not so much because the swap itself was a criminal act, and all those swapped for Bergdal were criminals who were effectively released.
