Looks like it is still on the rumor mill...

A quick Google search does reveal a lot about saber rattling and chest thumping going on over there, but no specific mention of a shoot down.

NATO will pledge to defend Turkey, right up until the moment the Russian tanks cross the border. I'm not even sure how much that bothers me... With any luck, they'll drive straight through to Constantinople.

Russia doesn't actually have enough troops for that.

But yeah, Turkey would be on their own.

We barely had enough troops to take Iraq. Russia is weaker than we are, substantially. Their ground forces are a bit over half the total size (in personnel) of ours, and most of theirs are still conscripts that are effectively useless. They've created some elite formations, but that's pretty much all they've got that's good for anything.

Their national defense is based on nuclear weapons and a nasty reputation. Oh and some Spetsnaz dudes.

Considering how the Turks and the Russians feel about each other it could get real interesting.

I must be tired. I parsed this thread as "Russian jet shoots down turkey", and had an instant mental image of some MiG ace hunting down his Christmas dinner wildfowl with the onboard cannon...
