Special court-martial in Purple Heart case

A chief hospital corpsman accused of faking a purple heart will face a special court-martial.

Robert J. White, 42, is accused of making false statements to obtain the award after he returned from deployment with 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines, in Hit, Iraq, in 2005.

If convicted, the 19-year sailor could face up to a year in the brig and a dishonorable discharge.

White, who most recently was assigned to Naval Station Great Lakes, Ill., has said his medal is legitimate and his case stems from a massive clerical error by the Navy records-keeping system.

a 19 year vet that was just promoted to chief... something smells about this story, thats just not something that a long term vet would do.

Yeah, if you're going to BS a medal, get something with some promotion points! Last time I checked, a PH was only three points, same as an Air Medal, which you get for X missions without puking while onboard the aircraft.

I thought they changed that to the Sustained Aerial Achievement Medal and the Air Medal requirements were ratcheted up back in the 90's? That was the word when I left the '49th

Yeah, you may be right, I stopped worrying about air medals in 85-86. Rumor had it that SAC didn't like cutting air medal orders for females, and changed things around, so that the air medals still only went to "certified airborne heroes" (TM).

Thanks for reminding me. Wanna give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?
