I've seen some speculation that it was a spiked round, or counterbattery fire. Whatcha think? They sure done blowed up good!

This has been making the rounds on the intarwebz the last few days, I hope it's not a dupe.

nope, wasnt a counter battery... you can clearly see the blast out of the muzzle of the mortar one frame before the explosion... im guessing it was a spiked round.

MACV\SOG Spike Teams were doing this back in the 60's as part of their operations against the Ho Chi Minh trail - putting boobytrapped mortar rounds in NVA weapons caches.

Obviously it's back in fashion amongst the special operations community :D

I always wonder how these videos make it to YouTube.

Apparently the camera, and cameraman, survived, and he decided to post it to YouTube? To what purpose?
If time, chance and random process can produce a platypus why not an ammo tree?

camera found at the site after US troops come to investigate the area that the mortar was fired from?
