Re: Norks
So how would you neutralize the arty, Randy, were you the one making the call? Suppression and infantry, or is there a better way?

I'll believe it when they start marching over the DMZ.bubblewhip wrote:We're at war folks.

Again, same shit, different day. Nothing new here, similar statements have been made often in the past.North Korea said on Saturday it was entering a "state of war" Blah blah blah...
And, technically, you could say we've been at war since June 1953, and there has never been anything but a cease fire in place.
I'd look for those artillery positions we've discussed opening up, combined with air attacks and SOF strikes on Seoul and military installations, particularly air bases.Jered wrote:I'll believe it when they start marching over the DMZ.

If we have to actually get in a major shooting war with the Norks, Grandpa Termite is going to nut up. He still grumbles at Truman for not unleashing MacArthur and finishing the job in 1952........

Heh, if I was that smart...Lokidude wrote:So how would you neutralize the arty, Randy, were you the one making the call? Suppression and infantry, or is there a better way?
I think it would take suppression, combined with maneuver warfare (as Paw Paw pointed out) to punch through to the north (or amphib/airborne/air mobile assaults up north) to cut them off, kill resupply and maybe end the war without having to dig them out.
Disrupt their Command and Control
Look at deploying/developing something like Iron Dome to minimize (as much as possible, not eliminate) damage.
Keep Seoul's Civil Defense up and practiced

I'd have to do a map study, but if what you're telling me is true, the Norks probably can't turn their artillery around, so tube orientation becomes a huge problem for them. Get behind them, vertically envelope them, give them something to think about for a while.Lokidude wrote:So how would you neutralize the arty, Randy, were you the one making the call? Or, if they've got their tubes on rail so they can roll them in and out of the holes, put a smart bomb in the mouth of every hole to screw up the rail system. Lock the tubes into the mountain and they're screwed. Once you've got them enveloped, offer the local arty commander an honorable surrender, tell him that his folks will be treated fairly, fed regularly with good food, and medical care for the wounded. If he's an officer at all, he'll know that his goose is cooked and he'll march his boys out the back door.

Re: Norks
I got a hair cut this morning from the older Korean lady I've used for years. She wanted to talk about the Korean situation, of course. She thought the Norks are being run by the senior generals, who are using Kim Jong Un as a figurehead. I'd wondered the same thing after seeing a pic of him on Drudge a week or two ago--two generals were standing at either side of him, arms locked with his. I thought he looked a bit scared.
I saw a very extensive analysis of North Korean artillery installations and such the other day, using Google Earth. It was linked from an arfcom thread. I can't seem to find it doing a quick search, though; I cleared my history and such last night. It was a very interesting read. They did show that some Nork artillery was capable of being swung through a pretty wide arc. This site has what appears to be a pretty extensive download, might be it:

I think they should arrest the director of 'Olympus Has Fallen' because that's obviously what got the Norks all riled up.

Re: Norks
In general, Paw Paw and I are, I think, on the same page on this, with one minor nit:
Even assuming we've localized every entrance, (a big IF until they actually use one), and we've suppressed air defenses in the area well enough (could take days), then getting a hit on one of those entrances does not get a guaranteed closure. And any closure would usually be measured in minutes or hours for them to get opened up. We've got lots of targets in the DPRK that need PGMs to do any good and not all that many PGMs available at any particular time.
Drones might help, especially in clearing attack corridors, but no current drone I'm aware of carries anything big enough to destroy one of these entrances. A Hellfire or MK-82 isn't going to do anything unless they catch a piece in the open to fire. IOW back to about the same level of effectiveness as using counter-battery fire to suppress them.
Based on direct analysis of the problem I was personally involved in, this is tactically and logistically a very difficult thing to accomplish.PawPaw wrote:, put a smart bomb in the mouth of every hole to screw up the rail system.
