I cut any insignia off though. I've got an aversion to wearing military insignia that borders on a phobia.
Back before I smashed my legs up I did a lot of fitness training - rucksack loaded with bricks, 12 mile tab through the woods, navex, that sort of thing. Once when I was walking home an old guy waiting for a bus thought I was a soldier coming back on leave and thanked me for my service, he offered to buy me a pint. I wanted the ground to open up beneath my feet and swallow me, I haven't served my country.
I was wearing a Korean war era US combat jacket and German flecktarn trousers, only my bergen ( rucksack ) was UK issue, I didn't think that I would be mistaken for a squaddy, but I was and I didn't like it at all.
Recently I have made two exceptions. The first is a Mossad sweatshirt I ordered from an Israeli surplus store recommended by 308Mike, the second is my dads Royal Artillery cap badge, which I wear on my stockmans hat ( like a cowboy hat ). The badge is so old it should be obvious it didn't belong to me. I hope....
I'd wear a 'Support the Troops' t-shirt with pride, but I wouldn't wear one that could lead anyone to think I was current or ex-military.
