As Rod pointed out elsewhere, it's the day Japan "F***ed around and found out."
I've been to the memorial twice. Once to re-enlist my NCOIC. Much more solemn than the usual ceremony, The Oath seemed especially significant in front of the wall of listing the names of the dead. And standing over the tomb of so many of them.
