Saw it happen once. Said to a few co-workers "There is nothing in this building complex that can't be unbolted and hauled away on either at tractor-trailer or a railcar in a week." Shop was already UAW but few believed it could ever end. It did.

Happened to my late sister. While living in Tacoma in the mid fifties, my sister had to join the union to get a job with Ma Bell. She joined, and next day they went on strike. No Union bennies for her, which was understandable but she needed a paycheck to avoid an emergency diet called starvation. Ever after she was death on unions.

Reminds me of an old news story from back during Obama's first term I think it was.

A rich guy was going to open a mine, spend his money, start a new mine, and employ a bunch of people. And he got so much crap and bureaucracy (crap), that finally at a public meeting he just had enough and said to hell with it, he didn't need to make money, he already had money. So screw everybody and he'd just retire and not employ anybody because dealing with all of those people and their endless, ungrateful crap wasn't worth it.

When I had my Lawncare business, I had some morons as employees who came to me and demanded a pay raise.

Mind you cut throat companies paid $7.75 per hour. I paid $8.00/hour plus a $.25/hour bonus for being on time and not a nuisance each day. I also paid a $100 bonus per month (minus damage caused by stupid). Plus once you learned how to run the blower and edger that was a permanent $.25/hour raise. Once you got on the mower, it was a $.50 an hour raise. The driver got a $1.00 per hour raise. So within a month you could easily be making $9.00 plus the monthly bonus. Duration and such raises happened too.

When I told them politely to pound sand, they told me they would unionize. I laughed and said how are you going to do that? They said, there are 4 of us and we will go on strike until you pay us more. I laughed and said, I will have 4 new employees within a couple of days. No big deal. Try again. A few days later the ringleader said, I called the AFL / CIO and they are going to teach me how to properly unionize. I laughed again. You get an actual union and a court injunction that says I can't fire you all are replace you with smarter / happier to have a job people, then I will close down the business.

You can't do that. Unionize and watch me. I'll just open a new business in a new field and you will be cutting grass for someone who pays less.

About a week later, the ringleader showed up an hour late. Fired for cause. Problem solved.

I'm reminded of two incidents regarding WalMart. The workers won some kind of court-ordered extortion in Canada, then WalMart immediately closed the store. The Liberals still thought they won some kind of victory.

The second was in the US. WalMart was going to open in the hood. During the negotiations with self-appointed, neighborhood representatives that didn't even live there, the shakedown commenced. Among the demands was a slush fund for the negotiators. WalMart cancelled the store, thus infuriating the people who actually lived there. Oh well.
