Well, they didn't engage in mass murder of Americans, at least. I don't think I can recall any instances of the types of wholesale slaughter of women/children/non-combatants by UK forces. There was the whole "introducing opium to China" bit, and lots of "oppressing the natives for profit", but I don't recall the "we'll show those cheeky b*ggers about not wanting to be ruled by the queen - go kill everyone not actively taking up arms against us."

No need for a tax treaty, that's the current tax code in Sweden, regardless of country you earn the money in. Providing you live in the country in question and don't spend too much time in Sweden during the year. (I think it's 180 days, but I could be wrong.)

The Brits didn't round up and exterminate their own colonists, but they'd slaughter pretty much anyone else who got in their way right up until they finally left.

That's the difference - these were investments sold to Swedes, who were living in Sweden. TMK, that treaty ended long ago - and it may have only been for agricultural investments. (In the long, long ago, when my father was in industrial agriculture, he had a number of Swedish investors as a result of that treaty.)

Why would they bother, when they had plenty of Irish much nearer home?

I wonder what it's like to be rich enough to have those problems.

You're still young. You'd be surprised what sort of "problems" you can make for yourself by consistenty LBYM* and putting away money in collection of "fire and forget" coffee stocks with dividends set to automatically reinvest. More than a couple here have run up against that threshold.

Might be worth another thread... Been a while since we've had that sort of discussion here.

Even their union knows who to blame:

http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/ ... icial.html
A union official said Saturday the Remington Arms Co.'s decision to open a manufacturing plant in Alabama does not bode well for Ilion, and he's blaming New York's SAFE Act restrictions on assault weapons.

"It can't be good," said Fran Madore, president of United Mine Workers Local 717, which represents 1,180 of the 1,300 Remington employees in Ilion. "How can it be good?"

Madore said plant officials told him they wanted to meet with him Monday. They did not say what they wanted to talk about, but Madore said he assumes it will be about the company's reported plans to open a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Ala.
...
"The SAFE Act has been a terrible thing from the beginning," he said. "You'd think New York would be doing everything to keep us. Instead, it passes a law that cripples us."

The Birmingham News (AL.com) actually posted a poll to see if people really want Remington to bring 2000+ jobs in the "Merchant of death" industry to Alabama.

Quell Surprise, 95% positive result.
