I completely avoid it by just not being on facbook, and trying to mix in the occasional glass of STFU with my whiskey when home for holidays.

This is something I can never get the political junkies I've dealt with to understand: I actively resent the amount of time I have to spend monitoring the actions of the temporary employees at the various levels of elected government in self defense. It takes time away from things I actually care about in and of themselves.

I also think the pyramid is inverted in that I should be spending less time monitoring each level of government (local, county, state, federal) up the food chain, not having to focus on what a bunch of clowns hundreds or thousands of miles away are going to do to screw me personally.

Most people want to know what a politician will do for them. I want to know what (if anything) they are going to do to make government as irrelevant as possible to my life.
...even before I read MHI, my response to seeing a poster for the stars of the latest Twilight movies was "I see 2 targets and a collaborator".

Preach it, Brother!

When I went back to school I was working full-time. I had to take a certain number of electives and "State and Local Government" looked like a simple class I could do online. The textbook started out saying that the federal gov. did not used to matter as much but they figured out the commerce clause lets them control whatever they want. The author thought this was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Dropped that class. Did not think I could handle the blood pressure spikes it would give me. I ended up enjoying the philosophy class I took in its place.
