The US does whatever it can short of shooting at Russians. Primarily, it appears that we're doing some arm twisting behind the scenes to get the Germans to push for NATO membership for Georgia & Ukraine, and for Europe in general to threaten not to buy Russian natural gas this winter, while we openly sign a mutual defense treaty with Poland along with the one for our ABM basing rights. Basically, we seem to be arranging it so that the things Russia hoped to prevent with their "short, victorious war" actually come to pass.It's beginning to look like this will have been a tactical victory which lead to a strategic defeat. In chess terms, it seems like the Russians accidentally set themselves up for a Queen's Sacrifice Gambit.

Imports/exports mostly, with some modest income re-distribution...

And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.
