She's pissed because during contract talks, the women professional soccer players elected to take higher guaranteed base salaries, and lower profit sharing options. They traded pay opportunity for pay security.

Rapinoe is an excellent female soccer player, but is reportedly a nasty piece of work socially. She had a bad case of TDS; probably still does.

Ignoring her politics, she comes off as a complete bitch. If she, or any other female professional soccer player wants the kind of money the men are making, they should go play in the men's league..

Of course, they won't, because they have no chance of making it, as they can't even beat an under 15 amateur boys team.

They suck, and they know it, and nobody wants to watch them play shitty soccer.

Putting aside the fact that the women's team got thumped soundly by a team of junior high aged boys*, what Rapinoe really doesn't get is that playing soccer games is incidental to the function of the games as entertainment. Even if the men's and women's teams had identical contracts, the men's team would make more money, because (a whole lot) more people watch their games. And eyeballs on the screens is what makes the money.

Same reason NBA players make a sh** ton more $$$ than WNBA players (and why the NCAA men's tournament makes tons of money, and the women's one lost money the last year it was played.)

*(I think the picture that accompanied that story shows and interesting point. I assume the young man pictured is one of the U-15 players, meaning he was at most 14 years old in the picture. And he towered over those adult female players. And at least from my observation (at a couple of Texas A&M women's soccer games), female soccer players tend to be taller than average females.)

Yes, but again, he's under 15. Tall, and teenage usually means "gawky".

They play sloppy soccer. They won't be as fast, etc as grown men - but the couple times I watched, they play swamp ball.

They get a higher percentage of the revenues than the men - they just aren't very entertaining, so the overall cut is lower.

One thing a can't figure out - why do they call it the "designated player" instead of the designated hitter?

(Now, as a NL fan and purist, I believe the designated hitter/player is an abomination before God and a deliberate insult to the spirit (and rule 1.01) of the game.

1.01 Baseball is a game between two teams of nine players each)

And if you want eye candy, volleyball is tough to beat.

Have you ever watched a U-15 or U-16 boys FC recruit team play?

True. I will also say that women's college basketball (at least at D2 level) is pretty good if you like watching fundamentally sound basketball: ball movement, help defense, backdoor cutters, screens, boxing out, etc. When the game is played below the rim, fundamentals suddenly become important again.
