COLUMBIA — A South Carolina House member is filing a bill to allow residents to carry weapons without a permit.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Cooper of Piedmont said today he has filed legislation to allow any law-abiding citizen to carry a weapon.

The Republican says concealed weapons permit laws and other restrictions make it less likely people who obey the law will be armed and does nothing to disarm people willing to break the law.

Today is the first day House members can file new bills for the legislative session that starts Jan. 13.

this bill will go nowhere...

should it pass, SC residents would loose their ability to carry in states that require training as part of their CCW process... and SC just got the ability to carry in some of those states less than a month ago...

it sounds like a nice idea but it wont pass.

The difference is if it passes and they demonstrate, just like in Vermont, that in reality the license has NO bearing on crime - allowing more people to carry who still maintain their civil rights and in possession of guns.

*IF* it passes and they can show the only crime stats are those continuing to head downwards and the fear-mongering of the Brady retards is exactly that, and blood isn't running in the streets, no shootouts over fender-benders of unlicensed CCW carriers - it makes it MUCH easier to spread the idea to other states and eventually the rest of the nation.

They can brush off Vermont as an anomaly because they're such a small state. If SC goes the same way, then Florida follows, the others will start falling like dominoes.

Grass Roots Gun Rights is a good group -- if it passes, it won't affect SC's reciprocity -- same as AKs -- you can still get a permit so you can carry in other states, you just won't need one for SC.
