man, this is gonna be interestingWILL THEY ALL FIT????:
Washington D.C. has estimated that as many as 5 million people will come into the city for Inauguration Day!
According to several estimates, the "official" National Mall from 1st to 14th streets is approximately 146 acres. That equals 6.36 million square feet, meaning if you gave each person a roughly 3 ft. by 3 ft. space to stand in the Mall would be able to hold about 636 thousand people. If you put 5 million people into that area, each person would have 1.27 sq. ft. to stand in, just about the size of the length of your shoes!
If we extend the "unofficial" mall area to include all of the area between the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial, the acreage would increase to 309, which equates to 13.46 million square feet. If everyone was given a 3 ft. by 3 ft. area to stand in, it would still be only enough room for 1.34 million people. If you spread out the 5 million people from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial each person would now get 2.7 square feet to stand.
