Fear the Government That Fears Your Gun

Fear the Government That Fears Your Gun

In West Texas, it was not uncommon to see the bumper sticker “fear the government that fears your gun” on a lot of pick-up trucks during both terms of the Clinton administration. Like the rest of the South and much of the Midwest, we were hypersensitive to the thought of having our right to keep and bear arms infringed upon in any way. Moreover, common sense and annual FBI crime statistics taught us that 99.9% of the population only used their guns for defensive reasons, thus we were particularly leery of an administration that sought to take away our instruments of self-defense. Yet as bad as Clinton was, his push to disarm the American people would pale in comparison to what we’d see from a President Barack Obama, a man who not only wants to disarm the American people, but America’s allies as well.

In the 1990s, my fellow West Texans and I were especially bothered by the way Clinton turned every crime -- from Columbine to gang activity -- into an opportunity to pass incremental legislation which made it harder for law-abiding citizens to purchase and carry guns, and therefore harder to be free. And if Obama’s past is any indication, this is the same course he would take in his attempt to get guns out of our hands.

Why not?

Considering that the cities have a super-influence on politics that affect the rest of the nation - but which are completely contrary to life outside the city - why not? I can EASILY see it.

I'm definitely with 308Mike on this one. IMHO, that statement is unadulterated bovine excrement. Despite the slide toward socialism, I still think our country is the benchmark against which all others should be measured. As a Conservative Constitutionalist with libertarian leanings, I see very little in our current government to love. America continues to be great despite our government.......

To further expound on what the others have said, yes you can love your country but not like your current government. First off, countries are defined by so much more then their governments. The people, their culture, their ideals, the people's views on liberty and life and their history. Also, what that country does for others. While the government can either heavily influence these positions or more times is a reflection of these it doesn't always paint an accurate picture of the country as a whole. Just take the immigration issue for instance. The government for many (some naive, some evil and distorted) reasons wanted to basically have an open door policy to those neighbors to the south. The people rose up based on their beliefs (fair play/playing by the rules, need to assimilated and countless other beliefs) and told the .gov to piss up a rope.

I love my country and that is why I've taken the oath do defend it with my life but that doesn't always mean I love and agree with the government (administration/congress...) that is in power at any given moment. There is a huge difference between the two. But that is part of what makes this country so great, if we realize we've made a mistake or are heading down the wrong path we can quickly execute a U turn...not saying it always happens but we have a better chance then most in this world to do just that.

Actually, that's what I meant. That was Slick Willie right after Oklahoma City. Sometimes one is obliged to hate one's government if one loves one's country (like, say, the Carter years).
