Disturbing Revelation... I'm probably a Libertarian...

Post by Aglifter »

Still think they're idiots about the war, and I realize that international trade/contact, etc means we need TR's foreign policy, not Obama's -- eg, kidnap Americans, etc, meet the Marines... but... I've finally realized that any paternalism on the part of the government, results, inevitably, in Socialism...

Go to some LP meetings. You will meet a lot of people who claim with a perfectly straight face that the RP's opposition to abortion, teaching evolution without references to creationism, "practical" sex ed, etc are just as or even more damaging  than the DP's ever-increasing taxes, regulations, fees, and other control over the economy. And then there's the sanctimony over the war. It drove me out of the LP.

I know a lot of republicans who are against the "war" in Iraq as well. The view basically comes down to, "Let them stew in their own filth"

I would be a Big "C" Constitutionalist myself, if it were not for their foreign policy. The days of isolationism died when ICBMs came into the picture.

While I firmly believe that going into Iraq was the correct course of action(call it "sweeping up the mess"), the people of Iraq need to really start stepping up and taking lead. While that is happening, it is going very slowly(mostly because Saddam killed all those who would have).

Still, we can no longer sit idley by while other ill-willed countries aquire the capability to destroy us or our allies, even though most of the Ron Pauls of the world would like to believe otherwise.

Libertarian world view assumes that everyone is polite, objective and rational. That's clearly not reality.

Some of us aren't that nice.

Some of us consider Red Forman to be a bit of a softy, and think Walter shouuld be elected president. Some of consider Frank Barrone to be a glimpse into our golden years.

Some of us are angry cranks who love guns and hate people.

But not me. Nope, nope, nope.

I'm a classic liberal.

Or maybe even a minarchist, like Chris said.......not sure about that, though.
Beginning in the late nineteenth century, and especially after 1930 in the United States, the term liberalism came to be associated with a very different emphasis, particularly in economic policy. It came to be associated with a readiness to rely primarily on the state rather than on private voluntary arrangements to achieve objectives regarded as desirable. The catchwords became welfare and equality rather than freedom. The nineteenth century liberal regarded an extension of freedom as the most effective way to promote welfare and equality; the twentieth century liberal regards welfare and equality as either prerequisites of or alternatives to freedom. In the name of welfare and equality, the twentieth-century liberal has come to favor a revival of the very policies of state intervention and paternalism against which classical liberalism fought. In the very act of turning the clock back to seventeenth-century mercantilism, he is fond of castigating true liberals as reactionary!

For a minute there I thought you were talking about electing Walter Williams for President, and wondered where I could send my campaign contribution.........

Walter Williams is too smart to run for president. Besides, why would he give up such an easy gig - making democrats look foolish?
