Court shoots down law limiting gun purchases
An appeals panel rules against Jersey City

A state appeals court yesterday struck down a controversial Jersey City law seeking to limit the number of handguns people can buy.
Jersey City's law had sought to keep people from buying more than one handgun every 30 days. The unanimous appeals panel said Jersey City exceeded its authority and didn't have a right to enact such a local law because state law already regulates the sale of handguns.
"Jersey City, via the ordinance at issue, seeks to impose a local standard in a subject matter area that has been rather comprehensively addressed by the state," wrote Appellate Division Judge Howard Kestin, who was joined by Judges Edwin Stern and Christine Miniman.
The decision noted New Jersey allows "an individual to have multiple handgun permits so long as the permits are obtained in compliance with strict guidelines" in state law.

I love this one:
"Everyone knows the first order of any government is ... public safety," said Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy. "We are aimed at stanching the flow of illegal guns on the street."
Ummm, Mayor Healy, no one in his right mind is going to buy a handgun with a permit, then sell it illegally, because that gun WILL come home to roost. It's bad enough that we have to get prior permission from the state to buy a handgun.
Then again, Jersey City (and nearby Hoboken) are just NYC-west.

Hobokon, maybe, but Jersey City is still largely a craphole, despite some gentrification.

I would love to take a clue bat to "Mayor" Healy but feel the effort would be wasted. Unless you are an LEO in JFC they never issue permits in the required 30 days so they already have a de-facto one a month scam going on for their residents. I also doubt that any chief in JFC would sign off on permits for more than 2 handguns at once( state law means nothing to these bureaucrats).
I should thank my parents daily for moving me from that craphole when I was young. Still stuck in PRNJ but at least here in the 'burbs my permits(as much as I hate needing them) come quickly and in any # I need.

Ain't just Jersey city that does this. It's pretty much the whole state. One of my friends just got his after moving to NJ, took 3 months to get his FID.

It's pretty much the whole state.
My friends who shoot seem to have no problems. I get pistol permits back in a week or two.
The problem lies, unsurprisingly, in the urban areas.

And screwing over the people that buy guns legally is going to affect this, how, exactly?

I was talking about the Firearms ID card. They're supposed to either approve or deny within 30 days. I've yet to meet anyone who has gotten it that fast.

Oh, true dat. They have to go through the Staties who draggggggggg their feet. Mine took about 45 days when I got it ~7 years ago. When I asked the officer in my town who handles FIDs and Pistol permits about this, he told me, "The State Police give FIDs a very low priority on their to-do list."
I guess they're too busy setting up speed traps and inspection spot-checks.
