mekender - I have no doubt that you had a legitimate excuse...and I'm sure that there are a lot more legitmate reasons that can be offered up by other folks who visit here. I'm just saying that there are also a lot of weak excuses that people have used to try and excuse there not serving. I'll bet that most veterans would rather someone tell them that they just didn't want to join. No big deal...most folks don't. Color blind, asthma, allergic to sand-in-my-panties, and the like are just rather insulting.

Some of it I understand -- the modern military seems to expect everyone to be able to be on foot, in combat -- and I have no standing to have an opinion on that one way or another -- but the result is that men, like my uncle, who was very smashed up, but managed to get a desk job during Vietnam. Now, post-strongman, I haven't got a chance in hell of getting in, and it would be irresponsible for me to lie about it. My knees/back have no business being where another person would have to risk his life because they failed. (I haven't brought myself to using it in public, but on bad days, a cane can be helpful...)

My grandfather lied to get in, and then went back and "corrected" his records, so he could stay in longer, so I'm familiar w. the tradition of lying.

*When I was looking at colleges, my grandmother was heavily suggesting the Naval academy, which didn't really bother me, but I was well over the height limit... Her suggestion was, "well, I could make some calls, and see if there's a way around it..."

I'm both color blind and without spleen (ruptured in a car wreck at 16). I had to get a billion waivers to enlist but it can be done. It didn't even prevent me from joining infantry but did disqualify me from ever being a pilot, doing EOD, or SpecWar (the only thing I'd consider in the Navy).

I'm not grandstanding here. If I can, I imagine just about anyone can.

Don't know about now, but my dad had to go into the army because he had
flat feet. The navy wouldn't take him. I guess either something about rolling
decks, or they were just more picky.

My dad's uncle still swears that all he would have to do is make a phone call and either me or my bother would be officers in the sea bees... so i can relate.

Heh. None of you stated the obvious retort:

"Yeah, and Hillary wanted to be a Marine!"

UPDATE: He registered September 4, 1980.
He can't keep the year he graduated high school straight and he doesn't know what religion he is.

What a dumbass.

At times he's beginning to remind me of John Kerry. He is so intent on making a good impression at whoever happens to be listening to him that he will say whatever he thinks they will like, and mess up in the process. He really has no values or principles of his own, so he will just try to come off looking good. That's why he's such a disaster without a prepared speech.
I have no doubt that if he goes to Tel Aviv he will claim to have a jewish worldview, or something to that effect.

A lot of politicians on the left are like that. The skilled ones can actually fake it and give a somewhat coherrent opinion and view of the world, scewed as it might be, and the far left usually just raise their voices and scream louder to conceal it. But usually they just end up rewriting history to make it seem that they were right all along.
