I'm not sure if it means much, but I thought I should mention it.
I spent a few weeks this summer on a road trip in northeastern US. This is supposed to be states are solid Obama, or that polling says he will likely win.
I think I'm pretty good at detecting socialist leaning opinions or undercurrents, it's almost a survival skill around here if you dont agree with it, but I just didn't notice any support for Obama anywhere.

During the whole time I think I might have seen one or two Obama bumberstickers, no yardsigns, and in DC I saw one Obama campaign worker trying to gain peoples interest, but noone seemed to care. Anyone I talked to that brought up any political subject was far from what I would think to be an Obama supporter.

Since I didn't really seek out a certain kind of people, I'd expect to encounter a lot more support for Obama than I did. Except for the two bumper stickers and the single campaignworker (and the constant hippie antiwar demonstration in front of the White House), I dont think I met a single Obama fan, or anyone that's any fan of his campaign issues.

Erik: thanks for the informal poll. I'll bet that yours is more accurate than that of the MSM. ;-)

Honestly, I was amazed. All the media talked about how the democrats really had lots of support, and here I was driving through what would be their stronghold. And I just didn't see any trace of it.

As an aside, the issues that people brought up with me was the gasprice, "free healthcare", and to some extent what people in Europe really think about the US (because of Iraq).
From what I heard, I'd have told McCain/Palin to go on the offensive with drilling in ANWAR, really go on the offensive against "free healthcare", and to give a voice to people from other countries that aren't anti-US, just to show that they do exist even if the MSM doesn't quoute them.

Someone across the street put a bunch of signs on their fence so you see them when driving down the street. At first there was an Obama sign amongst all the local D candidates, but that one disappeared pretty quick.
If I head further south into the trendy/yuppie/metrosexual neighborhood, I notice more Obama signs and none for McCain. But if I head north towards the mansions, there's more signs period, with McCain signs outweighing Obama signs. And there was one gated mansion whose Obama sign disappeared pretty quick.
And I saw a lady with a McCain/Palin sticker on her backpack yesterday in the airport.

There are FAR more McCain signs in my neighborhood, and they're being left alone. A week ago many of the "Yes on 8" signs (no gay marriage) disappeared but are slowly reappearing. Friday evening, one of my neighbors (Hispanic family) had a large party with a mixed crowd. I have a few NRA signs as well as McCain signs in the front yard and while I was in the garage, I overheard one of the black guys (who was a passenger in a car that parked on front of our house) say to his friends, "Man, I'm not too sure about this place, I don't want to be shot for being black." - even though they were doing nothing other than attending a neighbor's party. Talk about stereotyping!

When I was washing my wife's car yesterday evening, a couple on a full-dresser Harley was riding up and down the street checking out the yard signs. They saw my NRA signs and did a thumb's up. GOA doesn't have any yard signs.

The local news has done a couple of stories on yard sign vandalism, and the Fox had a story about a McCain/Palin supporter having their house spray-painted with Nazi, 666, etc, and other crap.

Recently did a sign count on the main drag in the microcosm of Preston Hollow, New York; 2 to 1 Obama, and 2 houses didn't have signs.

Off of Rt 145, on the farms there's only McCain signs.

Obama people tend to be very enthusiastic, and very public about their support. They are generally tshirt/yardsign/bumpersticker people.

McCain people tend to not be so enthusiastic about McCain, are not very public about their support, and are gennerally NOT tshirt/yardsign/bumpersticker people.

This creates a false impression of overwhelming support for Obama, that simply isn't there.
McCain people also dont want to deal with the nut jobs getting violent and destructive over McCain signs...

i dont have stickers or signs because i dont want someone tossing a brick through my window... if they will cuss people out and threaten violence in front of cops at a Palin rally, what would they do if there were no cops around?

In our rural neighborhood all but one of the yard signs says "McCain/Palin". That one says "Palin"..... :D

The local P.D. was pretty busy this weekend, investigating vandalism in one subdivision in Gainesville, Va. Seems about 25 residences were hit-not the signs, they pretty much left them alone. They spraypainted the houses.
