This is a surprise? Rewriting the past is the favorite activity of totalitarians. From Myanmar, to Burkino Faso, to the Mexicans redrawing the boundaries of their states so they had 48 states like the United States, to the Soviets in the 1920's decreeing a ten day week with different trades having days off on different days, rewriting the past is the proven way to cut away the past so that new ways and purported new ways can be used on the masses.
It beats having to actually do something different.

“We trained hard, but it seemed that every time we were beginning to form up into teams, we would be reorganized. I was to learn later in life that we tend to meet any new situation by reorganizing; and a wonderful method it can be for creating the illusion of progress while producing confusion, inefficiency, and demoralization.” Not by Petronius the Arbiter, but by another man of that name.
The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.
E.g.:
"I believe in Freedom of Speech, but". . .
"I support the Second Amendment, but". . .

The thing about stuff like this is it starts with a degree of sensible nuance, but the the anti-western ideologues get ahold of it and take it too far.

The Vikings themselves were, at times and at some places, very much a multi-ethnic stew of people as the maurauded around also picked up whomever they could to supplement their crews. Viking was not a people, it was something you did, like being a pirate (a lot like that actually.) [For comparison, the Huns by the end were mostly Germans and Slavs and whatnot by the end, that did not mean the Huns were not a unique people.)

The Norse people, from which the Vikings came, were certainly a unique culture. They had a great deal of interchange with others around them going both ways, but that does not mean they were not a people, because every people have interchanged in terms of culture and population around them.

The ideologues latch on to this and say - see this isn't a real culture/people/whatever. It is not a search for the truth, it is an attack on that which they hate.

All true facts. Especially as a descendant of the Norse culture.
