How about exponential like 4k and 8k? Also, let's not announce exactly when the count goes up. Keeps them guessing.

I don't think it makes a significant amount of difference if the thresholds for member ranks are public or not, so long as either way there isn't an excessive amount of posting just for the sake of raising it.
