A captain and his first mate

There is a pirate ship sailing the seas, and as the captain stands on deck with his first mate the man in the crows nest shouts down
"Captain a Spanish ship to port!"
The captain turns to this first mate and orders
"Fetch my red shirt."
The first mate complies and brings him his red shirt. After a massive battle the pirates win and continue sailing. The next day the first mate approaches the captain and asks
"Cap'n why did you want that red shirt?"
"Well," replies the captain "If i get stabbed or shot in battle my crew won't see my injury and continue fighting."
Just then the man in the crows nest yells down
"Captain twenty Spanish ships to port!"
The captain turns to his first mate and orders.
"Get me my brown pants."
"Captain a Spanish ship to port!"
