The use of the word "but" usually indicates that everything preceding it in a sentence is a lie.

I never expected my count to surpass HTRN's, but periodically he performs a disappearing act... Last time he probably went on a months-long bender. 
I pulled up the members page sorted by post count the other day, and I was like, WTF, how did that happen? Then I remembered that all of us except Mike and Mekender unexpectedly moved up a position. Ag and I were trading spots back and forth until he went all anonymous and such.
